Protests urged as Mexico count nears end

With 99.59 percent of the vote counted, Felipe Calderon would win even if all the remaining votes went to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party. He had 35.83 percent of the vote, compared with 35.36 percent for Lopez Obrador...Less than 200,000 votes, out of more than 41 million cast, separated the two...."We are going to the Federal Electoral Tribunal with the same demand -- that the votes be counted -- because we cannot accept these results," he said. "We are always going to act in a responsible manner, but at the same time, we have to defend the citizens' will."

Before anyone goes celebrating the election of the ruling candidate in the Mexican Presidential election, it's important to remember that the so-called "conservative" pro-globalization presidential candidate does NOT have an "insurmountable" lead...it's a statistical tie. Just Presidential election 2000, the percentage difference between the tabulated votes is a least twice as large as the margin of error in the counting process.
This election will be decided in a recount.
Right now the pro-globalization candidate (conservative) is leading by approximately 200,000 votes, or .4 percent, which is a statistical tie. But that's just the tally of the votes. A recount will decide the election.

Same rule the communists (er, liberal/socialists/democrats) used here: Recount, cheat, recount, cheat, recount, cheat UNTIL the recount goes your way.
Then IMMEDIATELY stop.
Worked in Washington for governor, in SouthCAl (er, northern Mexico) and in many races in between.
Except FL - where our electoral college focused national attention on the single county blatantly cheating: Palm Beach.
They tried, but couldn't manufacture enough votes to make up for the rest of the state.

Is this old or has the conservative passed the communist? Last I saw the communist guy was leading by over two percentage points with over seventy percent of the votes counted.

Strange, I just read an article a few minutes ago that said it was no longer possible for the leftist to win.
Also, "leading by approximately 200,000 votes, or .4 percent, which is a statistical tie" is not quite correct. Statistics applies when you count a sample and estimate the outcome. When count the entire lot, it is just math and the percentage becomes margin of difference.

No it's not. In an election a lead of 1 is a win. Or, say, 537 in Florida...

Welcome to Free Republic. There are a lot of broad minded people who read your comments, and this is a GOOD place for exchange of good ideas. Don't mind all of the punches people throw, a few people have a few good ideas, and neither Left or Right has it all together...in the end, we need each other. So, thumbs up, and speak it out. Be prepared to take a few punches, especially if you give a few. This ain't for Little League T Ball fans. I speak up for Mexicans. We all have our world slant. So whoever wins the elections, we're going to unite and stand tall, with great courage. Forget the MSM and SOME crazy bloggers.

You're wrong on this one. Last night's tally is the official vote. Under Mexican law, the tally sheet is it. There can be no count of the acutal ballots unless it is established that the tally sheet has been tampered with or falsified.
So, statistical tie or not, the 200,000 vote lead will be a win.

This election will be decided in a recountIt's the recount that is giving us the latest. Of course, the leftist may just insist on recounts until such time as he and his folks can manage to add enough votes to put him ahead, then, like a good leftist, decide that no further counting is necessary.

Hmmmm...
To me a Protest would be to show disaproval, angst, etc, for unfair or flawed governmental actions.
To gather mobs of people to try to thwart, intimidate, and reverse fair and just practices-- is a riot/mob.
Leave it to the lefties (and the MSM) to call this a protest.

"we cannot accept these results," I wonder where they heard similar ideas! If I recall, the left in the USA refused to accept the results or the presidential elections and even now claims that Bush stole the election.

Under Mexican law, there will be NO RECOUNT just because the margin was supposedly "a statistical tie". Calderon's margin is currently .57% with 99.99% reporting. That's about 235,000 votes. There are likely no more than 4,100 votes left to count. That's not a statistical tie - it's a clear win.
There is no such thing as a margin of error in the final counting process. It is FINAL, absent a successful Obrador petition to the special Mexican election court. It is unlikely (but possible) that the court will call for a complete recount.
