I googled it, but did not recognize the name - Hank Ballard. I was thinking of a group like the Drifters, but it was another one.

You got it: "Hank Ballard and the Midnighters," that's who did that song!

P.S. I'm a former Oldies Radio DJ and I couldn't get it!

Ballard was the guy who did the Twist before Chubby Checker.

I pulled out my old 45's to look up the group, but it must have been on my 78's.

The TV show "Bob Horn's Bandstand" debuts. It would later change its title to "American Bandstand" in 1956.

When growing up in Philadelphia I would always tune in to WFIL and watch Bandstand. Even got to go there at 46th and Market Street a couple of times. Things turned ugly for Bob Horn and he was replaced by Tony Mamarella for a while, then Dick Clark came along. It was still Bandstand until they moved the show to California.

And did you recognize the classmate played by Jameel Farah...more recently known as Jamie Farr?

Do you think, maybe, that DADDIO was already a term, and the teacher's name followed?

Well, if someone tried to run me over, I don't think I'd be too fond of them either! ;o)

I think that you are right about Daddio already being a term. However I was 16 years old at the time and living in Lancaster, Pa. Calling a teacher Daddio seemed to me to be very risky and very funny.
