Four police and eight robbers die in S Africa shoot-out

Paramedics rushed to the scene of a "bloodbath" in central Johannesburg yesterday when a daylight gun battle between South African police and armed robbers left 12 dead.

Four of those killed were policemen. The other eight were among a gang of 20 criminals.

The shooting raged in the suburb of Jeppestown, east of the city centre and barely half a mile from Ellis Park stadium, one of the largest sports venues in South Africa and a key location for the next World Cup in 2010.

The gang had taken refuge in a house in the area after robbing a supermarket.

One paramedic who arrived after the first casualties were reported said he had encountered a "bloodbath".

Perumal Naidoo, the police chief for Gauteng province, said that four officers had "lost their lives in the line of duty". He added: "The robbers that were dealt with today were causing havoc in the whole province, and I am proud of the four policemen who paid with their lives to ensure that Gauteng will always be safe."

South Africa suffers one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world, with 19,824 murders recorded in 2004.

They want to be sure New Orleans doesn't get ahead of them in the death rate.

South Africa should bring the death penalty. 20,000 murders a year should be a statistic no civilized country should live with. They should adopt a "zero tolerance" policy towards criminals there. One Strike and you're going to be hanged.

Whats that their leadership recently said? Oh yeah, if you don't like it you can leave.

Yet another example of the wonders of socialism.

It is a different world there. I remeber reading a Road and Track article a couple years back about a special team of South African cops that target lethal car jacking gangs. Not only will they chase the car jackers, but they will shoot at them while they are chasing them.

People are so fed up with them that they are willing to let the cops go at it.

Hmmm. 12 dead S. Africans. A bloodbath. What are the odds that some of the blood is HIV+? A. Enough to keep S. Africa at the 12,345th position on places to visit in my lifetime.

Our son lived in Jo'burg for two years, 1998-2000. He headed up the SA branch of a major American company. They lived in a compound with other ex-patriots. This huge compound was surrounded by a razor topped fence, 24 hour armed guards with auto. weapons and dobermans. Each individual house had a wrought iron eight foot fence topped with spikes, locked gates, security systems and a 'safe' room and there was still the occasional attempted incursion!

Our son was armed at all times, carjackings were the rule, the company building was surrounded by razor wire topped chain link fence with 24 hour guard.

It is a beautiful country but not a place you want to live.

No...the problem is the guns.....BBC says so. Story about UN gun control cited this story as evidence of need to get rid of evil guns. Spin away...
