Nothing personal against you but I *despise* the idea of hiding Free Republic's content behind a subscription wall.

As someone who started participating in FR in its early days, I'd have to say that such a move would undermine what I thought the whole point in launching it was in the first place!

I agree. And I like having the enemy trying to infiltrate. We find 'em sooner or later, and it's fun to watch them get zotted.

I understand your sentiment however it could be designed so that people can still read threads, just not post or respond in threads unless they are a paying member.

Pretty well sums up my opinion.

As for "the site being antiquated," in my opinion it is still superior to all the other forums & blogs I belong to ( and they are legion ) for getting a really fast picture of "all the news, stories, and opinions you need to be aware of to get up to speed."

The closest thing to it is our Canadian sister site, Free Dominion, and even its "bbs-like" format is not as fast for comprehension.

One thing I keep lobbying for and would love to see is an "Ignore" button.

FD has one, and it really cuts down on the flame warfare and circular arguing.

I agree. You'd hear crickets chirping if we went to a paid subscription service.

Donations seem to be working well, but I am sure the cash-flow could be improved.

Absolutely crazy idea in my lowly opinion.

I thought the sole purpose of FREE REPUBLIC was an outlet for conservatives.

I didn't know that Free Republic was a business needing to post a quarterly profit.

I have been here a few days less than you. Have you noticed the change in the posts in the past few years? It is to the point now that I lurk some, post very seldom and mainly work in the garden as it is more enjoyable than reading the average drivel that is posted here now. IMHO FR will fade from the screen in two or three years. No idea what, if anything, will take its place, it will just go away and become irrelevant. I fear the same thing is getting ready to happen to the republican party and FReepers will wring their hands and watch it happen.
