A Giant statue by Damien Hirst showing the insides of a pregnant woman and entitled The Virgin Mother was unveiled at the Royal Academy of Arts in London yesterday.
The Virgin Mother took 18 months to complete The 35ft bronze sculpture, which dominates the courtyard in front of the gallery, reveals the foetus and the woman's skull, muscles and tissue.
The work, weighing 3.5 tons, took a year and a half to make and will form part of the Summer Exhibition, From Life, which starts on June 12.
"It will be very interesting to see people's reactions," said Edith Davaney, the head of the exhibition. "This is the first piece people will encounter on the way into the exhibition, and it says everything about the theme. I don't think people will be upset by it. I think it's very beautiful and life-affirming."
"...very beautiful and life-affirming."
Ummmm, yeah, sure. Ugh.

Butt-uglier than the formaldehyded critters. Congratulations to Mr. Hirst. I didn't think that was possible.
geez, what a gig.
Downright creepy.
Interesting idea, but this "artist's" interpretation is - well, odd at the very least.
And just why must this have been called "The Virgin Mother"?
The Virgin Mother was not just another pregnant woman.
Degrading and mocking. Pathetic.
Pointy nipple ping!
Miller is best known for his books Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
I'm anxiously awaiting the first copycat slaying...
"If someting is not worth doing, it is not worth doing well."
Trivia: Who was the author of the above quote and what was the author speaking about?
I'm surprised they accepted the sculpture and not just the base.
Man, ugly is really "in" these days with some artists. Not to mention pomposity!
Looks marginally nicer in #13, at least the left side - nice hand anyway. I hadn't realized the guy liked medical models so well.
The guy has technical skill and a lot of talent. He is no mean sculptor. But he is just psychologically twisted.
