But one can never predict what a NUT will do."

What Would Reagan Do?

Preparation of an intercontinental ballistic missile by a rogue nuclear power is an act of war.

If Anticipatory Defense means anything, it means something now.

"I have just outlawed North Korea. Bombing started ten minutes ago. Negotiating teams will be sent in to arrange peace terms when the rubble cools."

Pray for the President.

AND - BRING - IT - ON!

Too bad we can't destroy this missile on the launchpad. In a subversive way that would make it look like shoddy workmanship.

They would blame "saboteurs" and throw a bunch of people into a concentration camp.

I wish the United States would kick that missile out from it's launching pad with a couple of well-placed laser guided bombs.

Questtion was asked: Assuming they did fuel it, how long can it stay in that condition?

Dan(9698) is an ex-missile guy. He might be able to answer this one.

The missiles I was involved in were anti-aircraft. The first was the Nike Ajax. It was liquid fueled, and could stay fueled for months. The oxidizer was red fuming nitric acid, which is a liquid that did not require either pressure or refrigeration.

The other was Nike Hercules. It was solid fueled, and so could be ready to fire indefinitely.

Their missiles are liquid fueled, and probably use liquid oxygen as one of the fuels (oxidizer). It boils off if it isn't either under high pressure or refrigerated.

Missiles normally do not have either high pressure tanks, or refrigerated tanks. Both are too heavy.

The space shuttle uses insulation to reduce the loss of liquid oxygen, but is normally fueled just prior to launch.

They calculate how much will be boiled off, and so know how much is left to complete the mission.

They could let the liquid oxygen boil off and top it off just prior to launch, so it cannot be determined how long the missile could sit there before it is launched.

Guessing, it would be a matter of weeks at the most.

Yeah, that is why I pinged HipShot. He might be out of the net for summer vacation. I dunno. But he was a MIRV guy, too.

Am I the ONLY one to wonder what OUR government's stance is on this? Are we taking out the missile or what?
I saw Bush made a stance today on Iran's nukes...Where is the current threat?

Globalsecurity.org based in Alexandria, Virginia—a watchdog and think tank group on security issues—has also kept an eye on North Korea’s missile work.

“If this launch does not occur within the next few weeks then it must be assumed that some political policy and or technical issue have scrubbed this attempt for some unknown period,” reported Charles Vick, a senior fellow of the group that specializes in Russian, Chinese, Iranian and North Korean ballistic missiles and space boosters analysis.

FWIW

I must be so stupid. Enemy rogue power with nuclear weapons prepares their first ICBM which can strike deep in Continental US to deliver thermonuclear hell to American cities. Million dead. Somehow I think this is a threat. Anyone else?

Somehow I think that it is anticipatory defense to destroy missile on launch pad USING ANY METHOD WHICH WE CAN. Including cruise missile nuclear first strike. AM I SO STUPID?

Why do we have nuclear weapons, satellite observation, cruise missiles? Are they toys that are to frightening to ever use?

OK if they destroy Seattle, what, we will say "do not do that again?"

THIS IS INSANE! THIS IS POSITIVELY INSANE!

President Kennedy said "no." Are we going to say "Maybe?"
