In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”
The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.

How naive does one have to be in order to believe that somehow Al Qaeda wasn't in Iraq? Al Qaeda spans the bloody globe, how hard is it to believe they weren't in Iraq for f***s sakes?

al-Zarqawi had been in Iraq since the fall of Afghanistan and had begun training and planning for attacks against both Jordan and American interests. This was long before anyone knew the USA was going to use military force against the Hussein regime.
This came ot light when the terrorists were caught planning the chemcial attack on Jordan that was to kill some 80,000 people in Jordan. The complete confession was on Jordan TV and the transcript appeared on Jordanian websites.
Bush was absolutely right that al-Qaeda was in Iraq long before the war and planning attacks against US interests.

Full text of confession: Al Qaeda Plans Terrorist Attack in Chemical Weapons against Jordan
Al-Qaeda terrorist group was planning to launch its first terrorist attack with
chemical weapons against Jordan, a leader and members of Al Qaeda terrorist
gang confessed Saturday.
The confessions were made by Azmi Al Jayousi and other members of the gang
and aired tonight by Jordan television.
The terrorist attack was masterminded by terrorist Ahmed Fadheel Al
Khalayleh, nicknamed Abu Mus'ab Al Zarqawi, a top leader of Al Qaeda,
Jayousi said.
The Prime Ministry compound, the Intelligence Department Headquarters and
the U.S. embassy in Amman , were the targets of the attack, Jayousi said.
The gang manufactured 20 tons of chemical explosives that were enough to
kill 20,000 people and injured 160,000, he said.
Their target sites included: the Prime ministry,General Intelligence
Department and the American Embassy.
He added he was directly instructed by Zarqawi to carry out the attack while
they were in Iraq after coming from Afghanistan.
Al Jayyousi started to plan for the operation in Iraq, where he had moved to
from his Leader Abu Musa'ab al Zarqawi. Al Jayyousi had pledged allegiance,
and absolute obedience to Al Zarqawi since he met him in Al Qaeda camps in
Afghanistan.
Azmi Jayyousi: In Herat I started to train as one of Abu Muse'b's fellows. I
took explosives' course, poison high level, then I pledged allegiance to Abu
Mus'eb al Zarqawi, to obey him without any question and to be on his side.
After this Afghanistan fell. I met Abu Mus'eb al Zarqawi again in Iraq...."
Jayyousi: "Upon my return from Afghanistan to Iraq, I met with Abu Mus'eb al
Zarqawi. He had with him Muwaffaq Adwan, Jordanian national, whom I used to
know before from Afghanistan.
Ahmad Samir: I left Jordan to Syria, in order to leave again to Iraq. I met
a guy called Ayman, who is an aide to Abu Mus'eb al Zarqawi. I was unable to
leave to Iraq.
Your problem is that many Americans believed, probably inaccurately, that SH was directly involved in planning 9/11.
The MSM has somehow turned this widespread belief into a "lie" of the Bush administration, although the the Bushies themselves never said any such thing. The idea that SH was slandered about being involved with 9/11 then expanded into the theory that al Queda and SH had never had anything whatsoever to do with each other.
Both of these ideas have become more and more entrenched to the point where their truth is now generally accepted as unchallenged. Turning this around is the next best thing to impossible at this point. Facts have become irrelevant.

I suspect there is little political benefit in arguing if we should have liberated Iraq now. The media and the rats think they can win points with it, but the administration clearly thinks the rats are shooting themselves in the foot. Perhaps the administration thinks a vigorous defense of policy is better timed closer to the elections.
I would have hestitated to support the sending in of ground troops if Bush had said that he knew Saddam already had them. Al Qaeda connection trumps WMD

After Kurdish forces took control of Iraq's three northern provinces following the government's withdrawal in October 1991, numerous opposition groups operated in the region. Islamist political forces in Iraqi Kurdistan, which are exclusively Sunni Muslim, were represented in the Islamic Movement in Kurdistan (IMK), established in 1987. The IMK brought together several factions, some of whose members had fought in Afghanistan during the 1980s. By the mid-1990s the IMK was considered the third most significant political and military force in the Kurdish region, after the KDP and the PUK. After unsuccessfully contesting the 1992 parliamentary elections, the IMK operated largely outside the framework of the joint Kurdish administration, focusing instead on developing and strengthening a separate administrative, political and military infrastructure in areas under its control, notably in Hawraman and Sharazur, which bordered the region controlled by the PUK. In December 1993 tensions between the IMK and the PUK peaked in armed clashes in parts of Sulaimaniya and Kirkuk provinces. The IMK was forced to retreat to areas close to the border with Iran. The leadership left the eastern region altogether and for some months remained under KDP protection in Salahuddin. When increasing tensions between the KDP and the PUK deteriorated into armed clashes in May 1994, IMK forces fought alongside the KDP against the PUK. Eventually, the IMK leadership was able to return to its strongholds in Hawraman and Sharazur, and to establish its headquarters in the city of Halabja.
The IMK splintered over power struggles as well as policy differences. In May 2001 'Ali Bapir, a long-time IMK military commander, announced the formation of the Islamic Group in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Several smaller factions within the IMK, which espoused a more puritanical and ultra-orthodox Islamic ideology, also broke away from the movement at different times. Some opposed any form of cooperation with "secular" political parties and disagreed with the IMK's 1997 decision to participate in the PUK regional government. They also called for stricter application of the shari'a (Islamic law) in IMK-held areas.
Of these factions, the most important militarily was a group known as the Soran Forces. It consisted of several hundred armed fighters (said to include non-Iraqi Arabs), some of who had fought in Afghanistan. A second faction was the Islamic Unification Movement (IUM, or al-Tawhid), said to be the most extremist of the splinter groups. Composed of some thirty or forty individuals, the IUM based itself for a time in Balek, in the Qandil mountains near Haj Omran and close to the Iran border. A third group, Hamas, also opposed the IMK's decision to participate in the PUK regional government. Among its stated aims was to launch attacks on secular institutions in Iraqi Kurdistan, including Western humanitarian and relief organizations.
The emergence of Ansar al-Islam
These smaller breakaway factions themselves gradually merged. In July 2001, al-Tawhid joined with Hamas to form the Islamic Unity Front (IUF), which the Soran Forces also joined the following month. On September 1, 2001, the IUF was dissolved and its three component groups announced the formation of Jund al-Islam. The group promptly declared jihad (holy war) against secular and other political parties in Iraqi Kurdistan deemed to have deviated from the "true path of Islam". Following armed clashes in which the PUK defeated Jund al-Islam, the group was dissolved in December 2001 and renamed Ansar al-Islam. A long-time member of the IMK, Najmuddin Faraj Ahmad, known as Mala Fateh Krekar, became its amir (leader).
Ansar al Islam, which operates in northeastern Iraq, has close links to and support from al-Qaida. Al-Qaida and Usama Bin Laden participated in the formation and funding of the group, which has provided safehaven to al-Qaida in northeastern Iraq.
The group's fighters are also believed to have trained with al-Qaida and U.S. officials suspect it of helping hide al-Qaida members fleeing Afghanistan.

The orginal sealed indictment had added that al Qaeda had "reached an uderstanding with the government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq." 109
This passage led Clarke, who for years had read intelligence reports on Iraqi-Sudanese cooperation on chemical weapons, to speculate to Berger that a large Iraqi presence at chemical facilities in Khartoum was "probably a direct result of the Iraq-Al Qida agreement." Clarke added that VX precursor traces found near al Shifa were the "exact formula used by Iraq." 110
This language about al Qaeda's "understanding" with Iraq had been dropped, however, when a superseding indictment was filed in November 1998." 111

"...One of the hazy questions that surrounds Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda is really its relationship, if any, with Iraq and with Saddam Hussein.
We've often heard that Osama bin Laden would not have been a natural ally, for religious reasons, for the composition and nature of Saddam Hussein's regime. And our staff report, as you just heard, basically says there's no credible evidence of any cooperation between the two. However, there seems to be some indicia that there may have been.
And, Mr. Fitzgerald, I'm delighted you're here, because this first question really I wanted to ask specifically to you, because it relates to the indictment of Osama bin Laden in the spring of 1998.
FIELDING: This is before the U.S. Embassy bombings in East Africa and the administration indicted Osama bin Laden. And the indictment, which was unsealed a few months later, reads, "al Qaeda reached an understanding with the government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government, and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the government of Iraq."
So my question to you is what evidence was that indictment based upon and what was this understanding that's referenced in it?
FITZGERALD: And the question of relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda is an interesting one. I don't have information post-2001 when I got involved in a trial, and I don't have information post-September 11th. I can tell you what led to that inclusion in that sealed indictment in May and then when we superseded, which meant we broadened the charges in the Fall, we dropped that language.
We understood there was a very, very intimate relationship between al Qaeda and the Sudan. They worked hand in hand. We understood there was a working relationship with Iran and Hezbollah, and they shared training. We also understood that there had been antipathy between al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein because Saddam Hussein was not viewed as being religious.
We did understand from people, including al-Fadl -- and my recollection is that he would have described this most likely in public at the trial that we had, but I can't tell you that for sure; that was a few years ago -- that at a certain point they decided that they wouldn't work against each other and that we believed a fellow in al Qaeda named Mondu Saleem (ph), Abu Harzai (ph) the Iraqi, tried to reach a, sort of, understanding where they wouldn't work against each other. Sort of, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
And that there were indications that within Sudan when al Qaeda was there -- which al Qaeda left in the summer of '96 or spring '96 -- there were efforts to work on joint -- you know, acquiring weapons.
FITZGERALD: Clearly, al Qaeda worked with the Sudan in getting those weapons in the national defense force there and the intelligence service. There were indications that al-Fadl had heard from others that Iran was involved. And they also had heard that Iraq was involved.
The clearest account from al-Fadl as a Sudanese was that he had dealt directly with the Sudanese intelligence service, so we had first-hand knowledge of that.
We corroborated the relationship with Iran to a lesser extent but to a solid extent. And then we had information from al-Fadl, who we believe was truthful, learning from others that there were also was efforts to try to work with Iraq. That was the basis for what we put in that indictment. Clearly, we put Sudan in the first order at that time as being the partner of al Qaeda.
We understood the relationship with Iran but Iraq, we understood, went from a position where they were working against each other to a standing down against each other. And we understood they were going to explore the possibility of working on weapons together.
That's my piece of what I know. I don't represent to know everything else, so I can't tell you, well, what we've learned since then. But there was that relationship that went from opposing each other to not opposing each other to possibly working with each other.

In regards to the Iraqi intelligence documents that discussed Al Zarqawi presence in Iraq, as posted on the Foreign Miliarty Services Office (FMSO) website (document ISGZ-2004-019920 ) it appears that the some in the Iraqi intelligence apparatus provided the accurate information about Zarqawi presence in Iraq with attached pictures of him, but when the information reached the Director or a Director of the Iraqi intelligence he dismissed it as not accurate. This is interesting since it seems there was an intended cover up by this top Iraqi Intelligence officer about the presence of Zarqawi in Iraq despite the much stronger evidence that he was already in Iraq.
I am posting below the translation of the FMSO document ISGZ-2004-019920 and I will make it in a chronological order and please note that I put illegible word(s) when the word(s) in the pdf document is(are) very blur and cannot be read with accuracy and that it is hand writing documents and not printed so it make difficult to read some of the words:

Page 4, 5, and 6 of the pdf document were the attachments that the Iraqi intelligence officer attached to his letter and it contain pictures of two individuals and one of them ispage Ahmad Fadil Nazal AlKhalayla or better know to us a Zarqawi (pages 4 and 5).
Page 8 is very illegible, page 9 is almost blank with a foot note saying “Regarding the possibility of Al Qaeda individuals entering the country”, and page 10 is a blank cover letter with no writing on it ( On the right hand corner it is written “ The Iraqi Republic Presidency of the Republic, Intelligence Service).
Page 2: This a letter from intelligence officer R.K dated on 17/8/2002 asking the Director to review the information in the letter from I.M 53/1/5 (Letter posted, translation of page 7) because they (R.K group) claim that do not have any indication of the existence of such individuals of Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Page 3 is a reply to the letter of R.K from the Director Ismail Mohamad (Initial M.I or I.M) and basically it says that after they inspected the content of the letter from M 53 they found no indication of the existence of these individuals within the public.

It seems to me that the lower branch of the Iraqi intelligence provided accurate information about the presence of Zarqawi and AL Qaeda members in Iraq but for some reason it was quickly dismissed by another higher branch in the intelligence service as if they want to cover this up and not follow through on it.

March 17, 2006: Declassified documents from Iraq show 3,000 Saudi and Iraqi mujihideen depart Iraq in Nov 2001 to fight US in Afghanistan
The newly declassified documents shed more and more light on the evolution of the violent insurgency in Iraq, and show that Saddam Hussein’s government was aware not just of the presence of Al Qaeda terrorist Abu Mus’ab Al Zarqawi, but also was aware that the Anbar province in Iraq was being used as a launch point for organized groups of jihadis headed to fight the United States in Afghanistan.
The document, addressed to the Security Board, Fedayeen Saddam at the office of the Presidency in Iraq, reports what it describes as a “rumor”, says:
there is a group of Iraqi and Saudi Arabians numbering around 3,000 who have gone in an unofficial capacity to Afghanistan and have joined the mujahidin to fight with and aid them in defeating the American Zionist Imperialist attack
This clearly indicates that Iraq was being used as a transit point or launch point for Saudi Arabian jihadis, as well as Iraqis, who wanted to go join the forces of Osama Bin Laden in Iraq in November 2001, nearly a year and a half before the US and Coalition forces commenced military action against Saddam Hussein’s regime.
The sheer volume of “mujahideen” that reportedly departed from the Anbar province, combined with the presence of Zarqawi in Iraq, indicates the presence of an organized Al Qaeda infrastructure within Iraq just a few months after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
The Anbar province is Iraq’s largest province and is located east and southeast of Baghdad. Anbar borders the neighboring states of Jordan, Syria, and Saudi Arabia, making it a popular transit point for the insurgents moving in and out of Iraq.

That evening Salameh drove Yousef and Ismail to JFK airport; Yousef escaped to Pakistan on falsified travel documents, and Ismail flew home to Jordan. But Salameh looks to have been deliberately left behind by Yousef, not provided with money he needed for a plane ticket...Salameh had used Musab Yasin's phone number when renting the van, and Abdul Rahman Yasin was picked up the same day in a sweep of sites associated with Salameh. Abdul Rahman was taken to New Jersey FBI headquarters in Newark. He is reported to have been extremely cool, as a trained intelligence agent would be. He was helpful to investigators who themselves faced tremendous pressure to produce answers. He told them, for instance, the location of the apartment that was used to make the bomb, a key bit of information. They thanked him for his cooperation and let him walk out. This, although he had arrived just six months before from Iraq, and might well attempt to return there. And indeed, the very next day, Abdul Rahman Yasin boarded Royal Jordanian 262 to Amman, the same plane Salameh had hoped to catch. His companion, a Palestinian named Ahmad Ajaj, who arrived on a fake Swedish passport, was arrested and found to have bombmaking videos and manuals in his luggage.
Salameh entered the US in 1988 on a Jordanian passport and a visitors visa issued in Amman, Jordan. He applied for legal residence status [presumably asylee status], was turned down, and continued to be in the country on appeal of that decision. Abdel Rahman, an Egyptian religious leader charged with inciting a 1989 riot in Egypt, obtained a visa in Khartoum, Sudan which had no automated lookout system that would have identified him as a security threat. He entered as a tourist and applied for political asylum and received legal residence. An immigration judge ordered him deported in March, 1993, but he was still in the country four months later when he is arrested for terrorist acts.
