China irked by topless women's health ad

Tue Jun 13, 12:45 AM ET

A Chinese TV presenter issued a public apology after posing topless with two other women in hospital advertisements for women's health, the Beijing News said on Tuesday.

Chen Dan, a presenter on Changsha TV's "Women's channel" in the southeastern province of Hunan, drew fire from Internet chat-rooms and station bosses after her "Clever Girls Love Themselves More" advertisement appeared at bus stops and on billboards in Hunan's capital, Changsha.

Chen, who was suspended from presenting duties said it was a "public interest advertisement", the Beijing News said.

"My intentions were good," the paper quoted her as saying. "I hoped to draw people's attention to women's health, but because the format was inappropriate it caused a huge backlash. In future I will choose more suitable ways of publicising women's health."

The advertisement provoked fierce debate online and in local media over the morality of using nudity to promote public interest causes, and whether the article was a commercial stunt for the women or Changsha's Shangmei Gynaecology Hospital.

"What a shame breasts have become the leading actor," the official Xinhua news agency said in a commentary.

"This is a serious attack on women," fumed an online commentator. "It goes completely beyond the moral and aesthetic baseline."

The "Clever Girls" advertisement furore followed a controversy over several actresses who posed nude in support of breast cancer prevention in a lifestyle magazine in October 2005.

Nude anti-war protests, nude PETA protests, now nude health ad. Seems that latent exhibitionism is itching to come out whenever there is a plausible cover.

It's not a bad thing! Not with women who look like these three.

Boy, that really illustrates the trend for glamorizing white skin, Western features, and anything other than black hair, doesn't it? I assume their bosoms have been augmented, as well ...

Seems like the message is, "Women's health = plastic surgery."

Hi Tax-chick. My wife is Japanese and Asians do have this thing about light colored skin. In the west, people like a nice tan. In Asia, at least in Japan, it is more glamorous to have white skin and lighter (i.e. brown rather than black) hair. Culturally fair skin is in and tan skin is out.

I've read articles discussing the same fashion for light skin and Western features in China. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's hardly "healthy," any more than Northern Europeans' wanting to be tan is healthy!

How infantile, Guys? I don't like the Chinese government anymore than the next guy, but at least they are trying to stem the tide of filth. Give advertisers an inch they will show you a mile south and north of the belt-line. They will find any reason to use sex to sell a product from chewing gum to large aircraft and seats on them, example Pimp Air from our friendly Hooters establishment. We wonder why we are in-midst of great cultural battles both within the US and across the Globe. We have gone from sexual freedom to sex as recreation, and the results are in; 50% divorce rate, huge % of black births to single mothers, high teen pregnancy and STD rates, and most distressing is children growing up faster than they should. And yet some like Nero, are dancing and play a musical instruments while Rome burns.

Your assumptions are false. Why do Westerners always think people from the East want to be like them? It would be laughable if it weren't for the fact that it's a sad product of their ego.

There needs to be an end the objectification of women and increasingly men in our society. I believe when the family dies a society dies. Sex should be a means to bring a man and woman closer in an emotional since. Sex today has become empty and no better than masturbation because when sex becomes recreation it makes the person you are doing it with disappear into the background. This coupled with the mainstreaming of pornography has made America in many place a cultural plague. I don't believe in abstinence before marriage but I believe sex is better when you have some you care for and someone you are good match for as well as a clear path to a commitment down the line. So, I am not a total prude.
