PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A civil rights watchdog agency opened an investigation on Monday into a Philadelphia cheese steak restaurant that posted a sign saying "This is America - when ordering, speak English."
The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations complaint effectively opens a case against Geno's Steaks of South Philadelphia, said Rachel Lawton, acting executive director of the agency.
The Philadelphia controversy has fed a national debate over immigration in which the U.S. Senate passed a bill that would declare English the national language and politicians have raised objections to a Spanish version of the national anthem.

Pin headed Liberals are falling all over themselves to drive this guy out of business I bet.....
The First Amendment is for some people, not for others. It's the liberals and their thought police to decide...
Reason #1,333,111 to hate Liberals. Geno's is awesome.
This guy does a good business and now it is off the wall.
They have no grounds to close him down, he doesn't refuse service to non-English speakers.
"...Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Pepsi, Pepsi..."
so just put up a sign that says "All WE speak is english... if you want us to understand you, you speak english too!!!"
Your tax dollars at work, Philadelphians. These people actually get paid to harass a patriotic small businessman, and you're paying them.
Being on the West Coast, I really wish I could buy a bunch of Geno's cheese steaks by mail order. At the least I want the t-shirt. Anybody have contact info for Geno's?
I'll never have to agonize over choosing between Pat's and Geno's again. I'm a Geno's man forevermore.
Isn't this the place where John Kerry went and ordered a cheesesteak with Swiss cheese?
That would be out of character for Kerry. He prefers a French cheese like Camembert or Gruyere. A glass of chardonnay is required as well.
The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations are wasting the taxpayers money.
I hope Geno fights back.
A Geno Ping
Oh, goody!
I love watching libs overreact to this!
Yeah, keep telling all the working class democrat voters of Philadelphia they need to learn Spanish!
(wipes popcorn butter off chin)
Word has it they're so quick with service a guy with a stuttering prollem went in and before he could get stopped, he'd ordered a half dozen chchchchcheesestststseaks.
Not really, the guy is I think third generation Italian with a thick Brooklyn accent.

I hear he did ask for Gruyére first.
He went to Pat's King of Steaks. This is across the street from Gino's.
Then when he tried to eat the sammich - like a priss - cameras started snapping and he got all po'd
Photo op gone bad.
BTW - both Pat's and Gino's are bound to raise your cholesterol 100 points (heavan!!)
More like "cheesebargah" "cheesebargah"
No, that was Pat's across the street.

Cheesesteaks. I'm sorry. But the world could do without those monstrosities.
unless the gubmint says otherwise..which they're trying to do..
Pretty soon they will probably require all business's to have a staff worker and manager who speaks the top 5 languages in the nation before they can even open for business.
'..watch the lefties pull his business license..'
knew this would happen. Libs think free speech applies only to them. Hope his restaurant meets all city/state codes and cleanliness standards..cause they'll try to get him however they can. And, I'd keep a VERY CLOSE watch on any lib inspectors that come into restaurant....wouldn't put it past them to 'bring in' dirt.
God bless this patriotic man.

Meatball Meatball. They are Italian.
oops, sorry for double post.....got to learn patience.
I would love to know just who is was that filed the compliant. These agencies don't act on anything until a compliant is filed.
"Cheesesteaks. I'm sorry. But the world could do without those monstrosities."
WRONG! What the world needs is a Geno's Steaks branch in Los Angeles.
Is Geno's required to employ folks fluent in every language in the event a guy who speaks the African clicky stuff wanders by and wants to try one of these babies?
"'..watch the lefties pull his business license..' "
There would be riots.
I was thinking more of a role reversal with the quote coming from some of the customers. How hard would it be to learn three or four English words to be able to order?
Ben Franklin is truly rolling over in his grave.
If that's all Geno's staff speaks, customers won't get much ordering in something other than English...
Yeah, we should all eat tofu and brie.
Posts like yours are a reminder that some FReepers are nothing more than closet liberals.
Sign says "please" speak English! They do not refuse service to anyone. Also, the sign has been there since October!
What about places that have signs saying, "no shoes, no shirt, no service"? Isn't that discrimination ?
I have traveled the World knowing only two sentences of the local language, wherever I happen to be. "I'm sorry, I don't speak (insert local language here), could we please speak English", and "Two more beers, please". In my younger, single days, I also made it my business to know how to say "You look lovely tonight". These stock phrases allowed me to have a good time everywhere except Somalia, where there are simply no good times to be had.
But if I were a foreigner in Philadelphia, I would also make it my business to learn how to say "Gimme one of those Geno's Cheesesteaks and a Coke!"
They know some English words.
Welfare
Food Stamps
Materity Ward in Emergency Ward
Beer
Home Depot
Furthermore, Lawton ordered, Geno's must henceforth be ready to take customer's food orders accurately in any language the customer chooses: French, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Italian, Celtic, Arabic, Egyptian, Armenian, Turkish, Chechen, Russian, Portuguese, Ebonics, Navajo, Siouan, Polynesian, Japanese, Chinese, International Sign Language, ....
Thier mission, as stated on their website doesn't cover this.
... discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age over 40, sex, sexual orientation, disability, marital status. and gender identity
Geno's does violate any of these. He's even said on interviews, that if they can order in english, he simply sells them whatever they are pushing.
Exactly what authority does this "Civil Rights Commission" have? When exactly did small business owners lose the right to free expression? Where is the ACLU when (really) you need them?
To Rachel Lawton:
I knew you would waste the taxpayers money and try to persecute Gino's for thought crimes.
Freedom of speech is only for those who parrot the liberal line. Anyone who dares to express politically incorrect ideas will feel the wrath of the Thought Police.
Are you going to require an interpreter for every known language? Force him to acknowledge his sins and shout I LOVE BIG BROTHER?
