Students Rush to Block Exit Exam
News10 ^ | 5/26/06 | Mikey_1962

Posted on 05/26/2006 11:31:53 AM PDT by Mikey_1962

Attorneys for a group of students who sued the state to suspend the high school exit exam have filed an emergency request with a state appeals court. They want the court to urgently hear their claims the test should be suspended for this year's graduating class.

On Wednesday, the state Supreme Court stayed a lower court's injunction that had barred the exam from taking effect for the Class of 2006. It meant the exam would be a requirement for seniors to graduate.

The students and their parents argued that the exam is discriminatory because all California students do not have equal preparation or instruction.

Approximately 47,000 students had not yet passed the English and math test by March.

Complete crock of BS. The test is for a 7th grader. And they can't pass it 5 years later?

All exams are discriminatory and should be ended immediately.

It levels the playing field for those that did not care about their education and those that did. Sort of reduces the meaning of High School Graduate.

What this article does not mention is that the lawsuit was originally brought by a Mexican national (illegal) who has been in the country 4 yrs. She doesn't speak English well enough to pass the test.
I am sure that the current lawsuit is also by illegals.

If they put half as much energy into studying and preparing for the test as they put into suing, they would do well enough to pass the test.

The MSM also never bothers reporting that only a small fraction of the students that failed the test are otherwise qualified for graduation.

Put another way most of those who failed the test also did'nt complete their coursework and would'nt graduate in any case.

Not that a highschool diploma means anything these days (except that the student can work a system well enough to live through four years of BS).

Fine,

Go ahead and let them "graduate". Every employer worth their salt is going to ask for proof that they passed the exit exam, which will become the new "actual" diploma.

The folks pushing for this don't realize that they are themselves building an underclass. I guess it's easier than teaching eh?

You can't actually expect the children to be RESPONSIBLE for learning anything, can you?

I mean COME ON, this is America where I have the right to life (oh wait, no you don't have that right unless your mother says so), liberty (well, after May 20th or so when you're done paying your taxes for the year), and the pursuit of happiness (ok, maybe you don't actually have to PURSUE it, you should just HAVE IT).

And thus, this exan is obviously discriminatory because it makes the whiny kids unhappy.

These people have no shame. They come over the border without regard for the law, the environment or the destruction of another country's culture.

I'd love to see the names of those who failed the test published in a list on the Internet.

I wonder how long it's going to be before colleges require an actual diploma to get in? That "Certificate of Attendance" is going to be good for nothing. Above poster is right; employers are going to want the diploma as well.

Not that a highschool diploma means anything these days (except that the student can work a system well enough to live through four years of BS).

I slept in my HS classes and didn't bother with homework. Made B's and C's and I figured it was good enough. Almost flunked out of college my first year (wasn't entirely my fault since I had an impressive number of mediocre to bad teachers, but certainly a large percentage of it was my fault). Transferred to a different university after my first year and made 3.0 or higher every semester after that except maybe one.

The point of this story is that HS was such a joke. It does not prepare anyone for college. I hear parents talking about their little darlings getting ready for college by taking AP courses and Honors English. What a waste of time. Nobody flippin' cares. They give me pained looks and accuse me of cynicism when I tell them the truth: that it'd be better, for getting scholarships, to take the traditional courses and get higher grades on their transcripts and then to study up for the ACT and score well on it. Unless you test out of a college class for credit, taking Honors english, accelerated math, and AP courses is a waste of time. Those classes do not prepare you for college. You need to prepare on your own.

AP courses by definition are college credit.

Granted many colleges look at GPA without looking at what kind of coursework you took.

I entered college at 18 with more then 30 credits. Some high schools absolutly do prepare you for rigorous coursework. Just no the government ones.

What we really need is a ETS or someone to create national private O-level type exams.

Still nobody cares. You can tell if a prospective hire is a moron in five minutes. Sometimes you have to fill the seat.

Welll..not so fast.

For any students wanting a chance at getting into the University of California (for example), the students will have a better chance if they load up on the AP courses....that is what they are looking for. A 4.6 GPA doesn't cut it anymore.

Course in my day, I made it into UCLA on a 3.6, an average SAT score, and 3 AP courses (didn't get any points for scoring real high on the AP course exam, but got points for taking the classes).

Though I agree, taking those classes does not prepare you for college, but taking them helps you get in. I was still unprepared for college, left for a year, then came back and made it through with a 3.4 GPA my remaining 4 years.

I recently had a phone call from Stan Ellis who is running for Assemblyman here. When I asked his views on illegal immigration the gal who called said...you want to talk to him? He got on the phone was his first mistake.lol
He was talking about the marches and said....those kids should have been in school. I said no, they should be in Mexico.
Our conversation did not go well since he used the old....I am against illegal immigration BUT I am a realist and there is no way we can deport 12 million people, path to citizenship, yada, yada, yada.

They'll deport themselves if we dry up the jobs and the benefits. Case closed, Mr. Ellis.

A 4.6 GPA doesn't cut it anymore.

Keep in mind, when I was speaking of GPAs, that where I'm at 4.0 is the highest. I know in some areas it's different now but not here.

Also, both the universities I attended weren't as hard to get into as UCLA, although the quality of the education, IMO, didn't suffer for that. I had some of the best teachers at the school I graduated from as there is anywhere.

It may matter more if your intent is to get into an ivy league school. For those of us that can't afford it or don't want 70,000 dollars in loans before it's over, we have to think about schools not quite so costly.

America is becoming what our enemies thought we were on 9/11.

Stupid, slovenly, lazy, cowardly, corrupt, weak, divided, culturally nondescript, arrogant and prime for plucking...

The Pied Pipers leading us over the brink:
ACLU, NAACP, Leftists, NOW, Teacher's Unions, Educrats, biased faculties, Media Presstitutes, Congressional Black Caucus, RINOs, Socialists, Affirmative Action, Welfare as a lifestyle, Dumbing down requirements, quota systems, lowered standards of excellence - morality and civility, pretending that ethnic myths, "music" and "art" are on an equal and commendable level --- ie, gangster rap, gangster dress and slovenly behavior, Uncontrolled borders and out of control illegal aliens sweeping across the borders, wrist slapping Judges, unenforced laws, incompetent Congress Critters, etc, etc, etc.......

So - it isn't important how stupid our current high school graduates are becoming ----- ignorance is bliss.

4.6 for those kids who get A+s on everything.

UCLA wasn't hard to get into in 81...there were a few in my class that made it in with a lower GPA, but probably a higher SAT, and no AP classes. But now, at least for the UC system...none of us would make it in.

And as for cost, holy cow..I couldn't afford it now..it was fairly cheap back then...200 a quarter for tuition, maybe 100-125 for books.

the aclu types tried the same thing with the lawyer bar exam. The test was alleged discriminatory, then when that failed they argued the issue was test preparation.

The bar caved and offered "minority scholarship grants" for test taking prep courses. (translation gimme money)

I suspect this is a "gimme money" situation too.

Correct, but also the most pandered-to class. Pols won't make time for intelligent multi-issue voters. These days they don't even have time for single-issue voters. All they want is a warm body to walk into the voting booth and pull the lever for the correct name. It's worked in Dem precincts for many many years.

no habla, no comprende, no understande.......
give me a break, if the parents stay on top of the kids to do their work, then all the little teenage girls and the young men would not be pregnant or in jail respectively.
I think that they teach the kids nothing so that they can be on welfare all their lives and do not inform them of birth control.

I am going to go out on a limb and I will probably get a lot of heat for this but I will back it up with an experience that I have indirectly dealt with.

I work for the STATE welfare system of Texas(so I know all about the immigration over here). Anyway, I deal directly with clients who are recipeints of Medicaid. Whenever I hear from White girls who have called me and they say that they are 14 15 16 they say their parents have basically kicked them out for being pregnant. When Hispanic mothers call me , they have their 13 year old daughter on the line and they are trying to find a doctor for their grandaughter since their daughter just went out on a party and got pregnant.

Kids learn from their parents and when they realize that it is okay to just go out and get pregnant and have unprotected sex, they will pass it on to others especially their next kids.

One last instance and I will stop. I had a husband call me and say that he and his wife had decided that they wanted a tubal ligation(for those who dont know the technical term for that is for tying of the tubes). They had two kids, were expecting a third before the mothers 21st birthday. Under medicaid policy they cannot have the procedure until the recipient of the procedure turns 21. He did not particularly like that. He said that they did not want 4 kids before she turned 21. I flat out told him without skipping a beat that he and his wife should start by practicing abstinence or birth control. He then asked me what abstinence was!

They continue to have children and it does not phase them.
