TX Governor: Perry - 41%; Strayhorn - 20%; Bell - 18%; Kinky Friedman - 16% (Survey USA)
SurveyUSA ^ | 5/22/06

Posted on 05/23/2006 9:20:02 AM PDT by LdSentinal

Analysis: In an election for Texas Governor held today, 5/22/06, Republican incumbent Rick Perry defeats 3 challengers, according to a SurveyUSA election poll conducted for KEYE-TV Austin and WOAI-TV San Antonio. Perry leads Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who is running as an Independent, 41% to 20%. Democrat Chris Bell gets 18% and Independent "Kinky" Friedman gets 16%. 1% prefer some other candidate. 3% are undecided. Since an identical SurveyUSA poll on 4/26/06, Perry has gained 2 points, Strayhorn has lost 5 points, Bell has gained 3 points, and Friedman is unchanged. There are 5 1/2 months until the 11/7/06 election. Perry's 41% support closely matches his 40% approval rating. If one of the Independents, Strayhorn or Friedman, cannot maintain support through a long campaign, then Bell or the other Independent may pick up enough votes to approach Perry, but Perry must still be favored as long as he has more than one serious opponent. Asked of 605 Likely Voters Margin of Sampling Error for this question = ± 4.1%

If the election for Governor of Texas were today, and you were standing in the voting booth right now, who would you vote for? Democrat Chris Bell? Independent "Kinky" Friedman? Republican Rick Perry? Independent Carole Keeton Strayhorn? Or some other candidate?

18% Bell (D)
16% Friedman (I)
41% Perry (R)
20% Strayhorn (I)
1% Other
3% Undecided

Hope Kinky takes second just to show that a non-politican can beat the best RAT candidate statewide in Texas.

Ma and Pa Ferguson and LBJ would be rolling over in their graves.

Kinky has my vote. And I'm not alone.

The incompetence of Texas state government is second only to Louisiana's.

This is only going to get messier. As more and more people find out the tax increase we are getting, Perry's stock will continue to slip.

Something else, I heard that Strayhorn will try to run ot the right of Perry on property taxes, immigration, and the new business tax. She has a war chest and reportedly will use it.

"If the election for Governor of Texas were today, and you were standing in the voting booth right now . . ."

. . .I'd be sick to my stomach just looking at my choices.

This is TEXAS, for crying out loud! We should do better than this.

I am pretty disappointed in many thing the Texas government has done, but second to LA I think is a bit over the top.

I mean how would you like Washington or California's tax loads, (even though Texas' is higher than I'd like)? Let's see how about the out of control AG Spitzer and never meet a gun control proposal I didn't like governor in New York?
Hell, there's even that emiment domain wonderland up there in Connecticut, of course that may be coming to a town, city, or state near you. That's five I put ahead of TX in worseness, and that's just off the top of my head.

While running to the left of him on spending, spending, and spending. No thanks.

This election looks to be over and I'm glad for it.

Laughable nonsense. TX gov't is nothing to be proud of, but there are a hell of a lot of worse run and more corrupt states. And Perry has been working to overcome the inate problems of the gov't, not adding to them. Tort reform, redistricting, ending Robin Hood, and increased privatization are just a few or the things he's pushed through that have helped conservatives.

Further proof that Kinky's support is primarily from the perpetual crybabies, ignorants, and knee-jerks. George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Jesus could be in office and ya'll would moan about how awful, corrupt, and betraying they are. The same gullible pouters who gave us Clinton via Perot, and didn't learn a darn thing.

The average property tax cut is $2000. That message is already getting out there, and it will resonate much more than having to pay a tax when redoing your will.

Texas's tax structure is almost evil it is so bad. We are getting ripped off right and left with the ridiculous real estate taxes and the sales taxes are equally absurd. So what does Perry do? He gets a further tax on businesses. How does that entice business into Texas? Besides, businesses don't pay taxes. We do.

My neighbors are from California and they look at the taxes here and just shake their heads. They will be voting for Kinky. I know a number of people who are otherwise conservative believe it is high time for a change.

If Strayhorn gets out of the race that brings Kinky into striking range of Perry's 41% assuming he picks up her votes. The Democratic candidate will be insignificant as the party here is essentially non-existent.

I went over to Baylor U. and listened to what he has to say and he made some excellent points and was well received by the audience. He will probably have to moderate his apparel somewhat but he is a breath of fresh air. I'm voting for him. We need the change. The alternative is to vote for the status quo which makes absolutely no sense.

LOL!! Ma whatever-her-name-is-this-week has NO SOLUTIONS to the school funding mess that would pass the approval of the Texas SC. She wants to put video poker terminals at race tracks, and "close loopholes" (i.e., she's clueless) in the business tax as a way to fund schools. Is that not a joke?

She has about half of what Perry has on hand. Perry will draw more money, and Strayhorn will continue to drop.

Neither she nor Friedman are serious candidates, and Texans know it.

We need a drug-addled fool as governor of Texas?

I notice you gripe about property taxes, then gloss right over the 30% property tax cut just passed.

Just what does Kinky propose to do about school funding? Nothing. He is even more clueless than Ma Strayhorn is, yet supposedly intelligent people want to make Texas a laughingstock by putting Don Imus' drinking buddy in the governor's mansion.

One thing you can be sure of about those "tax cuts" is that they will reach in the other pocket and take the money right back. Bluntly stated, it is a fraud.

Kinky is a lot more conservative than most people realize. He has a good campaign strategy.

He's appealing to young adults and college students who think he's a liberal, which he clearly is not if you look at his stance on immigration, death penalty, prayer in school, and energy. The stupid college students think he's a hippie who's obviously a liberal and are throwing their support behind him without knowing better.

I really wish there were more options. I'm just not a fan of Rick Perry. When he talks, it really appears as if there are people behind him pulling the strings.

You must be drinking Kool Aid!!! Kinky is a great and funny entertainer, but he is no Governor. Sorry to disappoint you, but the Pubbies are taking the whole state!!! And....things do not look good for a Democrat sweep across the USA. Taking the NOLA election into account and looking at this Texas poll, it is clear the Democrat Party is going nowhere. The majority of the American people feel the Democrats will not protect them or America. The Republicans are so scewed up, my grandson could beat them, but a good portion of Americans voters view the current Democrat party as traitors and being guilty of treason!!! And....so it is!!! End of Story!!!

Only if you sit on your ass and let your school board increase the tax rates.

If you do that, it's YOUR fault that the taxes go back up.
