ROVE: 'WE'RE IN A SOUR TIME. I READILY ADMIT IT.' THU May 15 2006 12:29:11 ET
Ater speaking at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington D.C. on Monday Morning Karl Rove took questions:
QUESTION: It's clear that the position that the administration's in now is not where it would have liked to have been with a few months to go before the mid-term elections. I wonder if you could just say what has gone wrong and how do you turn things around before November.
ROVE: Look, we're in a sour time. I readily admit it.
I mean, being in the middle of a war where people turn on their television sets and see brave men and women dying is not something that makes people happy and optimistic and upbeat.
But I'm absolutely confident that -- I heard this same kind of language about the 2004 elections in roughly the March, April, May, June period of June 2004.
We're going to be just fine in the fall elections.
And we're going to be fine because we stand for things that are important. We stand for strong natural defense abroad and complete victory in the war on terrorism which involves victory in Iraq.
We stand for a strong national defense. We stand for economic policies that are pro-growth, involving tax cuts and free trade. We are strongly for fiscal restraint in the budget process.
And our opponents, at this point, stand for little or nothing, except mere obstructionism. Whether it is the nomination of superbly qualified men and women to the judiciary, or our policies to reauthorize the Patriot Act to keep America safe in a time of global terror, the other party seems to stand for little except obstructionism.
And ultimately, the American people are a center-right country, who, presented with a center-right party with center-right candidates, will vote center-right.
Developing...
"We are strongly for fiscal restraint in the budget process."
HUH????????
this does not sound like a man who has been indicted
In what parallel universe?
I think Karl is whistling past a graveyard.
Pass the pipe, Mr. Rove :)
I was on here weeks ago, trying to tell everyone that WE ARE IN TROUBLE IN NOVEMBER.
GWB doing something about the border is a huge step in the right direction. I hate to say there, but a lot of the American public has a very strong impression of President Bush being out of touch with the situation on the ground in Iraq and with the situation at the pump of their local gas station.
More like delusional.
They in denial on illegal aliens.
He continues to dismiss the conservative base. What happens in the 06 elections will be a 2x4 between the eyes of these moderates.
This and the lack of controlling the Mexican border is why you're at 29%, dummy....
I think Rove is right. Try to remember May/June of 2004 when doom and gloom Conservatives and Liberals alike predicted that John Kerry would win in a landslide and the Democrats would take the House back. Lets look at the situation after Labor Day folks, these liberal biased polls mean SQUAT!!!!! Stay the course.
same thing happened to Clinton.
They lost contact with the American people......
they tried to be too much like Clinton.
Gimmicks like "compassionate conservative" don't last long.
Statements like...."family values don't stop at the Rio Grande" insult Americans.
He's generally right, and he is privy to the Iraq timeline. They will get their government in place and troop withdrawls will be started and replaced by air support.
Come November, victory in Iraq will be far, far more important than immigration.
The media has been selective in their coverage of the war (including the promotion of antiAmerican hoaxes). There has also been an outright refusal to cover positive stories (remember the reporter who sarcastically asked if they should just run press releases from the State Department?).
So acknowledge that the media coverage "on television sets" is not an accurate portryal of the conflict. We are not fighting Iraq. We are fighting jihadists who have taken the fight to Iraq.
If the jihadists thought they had the support of the locals, they would run for election. They oppose more than just the US' presence. And the media (Time Magazine in particular) has reporters embedded with the terrorists (see the Frontline episode on The Insurgency).
But it is "unpatriotic" to question the patriotism of the "impartial" media. Understand how moronic it is to fight a politically correct war?
Yeah, I caught that too.
"Mr. President Lets bring in 50 million poverty stricken immigrants. The people wont notice. They will be future Republican voters."....zzzz
Mr. Rove, define YOUR definition of "fine," please. Is it the same as Bill Clinton's "it" theories?
