Syphilis rates in blacks, women and babies declined significantly between 1999 and 2004 but continued to rise overall, driven by a dramatic jump in infections among gay and bisexual men, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.
About 64% of all the new syphilis cases in 2004 were in men who had engaged in homosexual activity, according to the CDC. That group made up 5% of the syphilis cases in 1999.
"Increases in gay and bisexual men are overshadowing the decreases," Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Disease and Tuberculosis Prevention, said at a national conference on sexually transmitted diseases in Jacksonville, Fla.

He said the fear of risky sexual behaviors, which grew in the era of HIV and AIDS, had faded somewhat. Effective drug cocktails, he said, has led many gay men to think of HIV and AIDS as a chronic but manageable disease. The result is that some do not take the proper precautions, such as using a condom.
To try to stem new infections, the CDC plans to work more closely with local health departments and community groups in the gay community.

Could someone please tell me what good are these drugs if all they do is keep these typhoid marys alive and infecting new patients? If they didn't practice safe sex when their own life was on the line, what makes anyone think they are going to start now?

This activity seems to be even less healthy than smoking and is very costly to society. The state Attorneys General should get together and file a suit against gay men and collect a settlement that could be used for education programs and to pay the cost of treament for this problem. This story is amazing because it's saying that AIDS drugs are effective, but syphilis is spreading more among gay men.
So then, the AIDS drugs are working well, so the gay men are healthier. Then since they are healthier, they have more energy to seek out promiscuous partners for satisfaction purposes? Which then exposes them to other types of VD???

I assume he means that people with AIDS are living instead of dying, and therefore they can and do contract other diseases and pass them along.
What else could he mean? That they feel safe since drugs can hold AIDS in abeyance and that they are immune from death?
