Details are sketchy, but this is what I'm hearing on Lubbock, Texas, TV weather reports. (Ron Roberts on KAMC says it might have gone down the main drag of Childress).
Doh! Should be "touchED" down.
Panhandle ping.
ping
How ironic... lol
Just heard on our local news here in OKC that Childress had a lot of damage from this touchdown of a tornado.
Tornado on the ground approaching Anna is what we heard.
Oh wait...this is a separate Warning. N. Central Collin County, TX.
From accuweather.com.....http://wwwa.accuweather.com/watches-warnings.asp?partner=accuweather&myadc=0&traveler=1&zipcode=75409&county=TXC085&zone=TXZ104
Last I heard was that it hit the "main drag", which is where all the businesses and restaurants are around 9:30 p.m.
Hopefully, if I know places like Childress, most people are gone from these areas by 8 p.m. at the latest and are home.
However, I did hear that the tornado was headed for Quanah, Texas.
Westminster, TX as well (Far north DFW area)
Yall take care
Power is out in Anna accding to some ham operators in the area.
Latest update on Childress per KAMC Lubbock:
power completely out; high school heavily damaged; lots of businesses damaged; homes with windows out due to hail
Any new information from Childress?

TORNADO WARNING NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
1036 PM CDT TUE MAY 9 2006
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN FORT WORTH HAS ISSUED A
* TORNADO WARNING FOR...
SOUTHWESTERN FANNIN COUNTY IN NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS
* UNTIL 1115 PM CDT
* AT 1031 PM CDT...STORM SPOTTERS AND DOPPLER RADAR OBSERVED A LARGE TORNADO 15 MILES NORTHEAST OF MCKINNEY...OR 5 NORTHEAST OF ANNA...MOVING EAST AT 20 MPH.
* THE TORNADO IS EXPECTED TO BE NEAR... LEONARD AND 9 MILES WEST OF BAILEY BY 1115 PM
Certainly appears to be a tornado on radar heading for Vernon, Texas.
The current Confirmed tornado, however, is from a different storm in the NE suburbs of Dallas.
Sounds like North Texas is no place to be tonight. I hope everyone is safe.
At least by 9:30 p.m. maybe there weren't any students in the high school (doing sports, etc.) or citizens at the restaurants.
The NWS is chatting with some ham radio operators who are chasing this one near Anna. They say it is pretty big, and still on the ground.
BTW, if anyone wants to give an encouraging note to the player with cancer, his name is Tyler Franklin of the Celina Bobcats, and his web site is here.
Again, prayers for the Childress Bobcats.
The Ham guys are reporting power lines down and roads blocked in Anna. Direct hit on several homes being reported over the radios.
That deserves its own thread, if there hasn't been one already.
Those hams are probably with my old Skywarn Ham group using the repeater in Howe, TX. When I lived in Sherman, (26 years ago...) we had a very effective Skywarn net setup.
We got hit by a tornado in Waco last week. It did some pretty significant damage and totaled several businesses. It was about 1 am, and they weren't sure if we were hit by tornados or straight line winds at first, but over 90 mph. Miracle of miracles, no injuries at all, but I've counted eight good sized trees down on my street, and we weren't in the main path. That's why I wanted the Houston Texans to be named the Texas Tornados. Springtime in Texas means twisters.
Dang it. Are there any ham guys that you know of in Childress, TX or Altus, OK?
You're telling me....I am in far north Fort Worth..and watching the local weather channel.
Hey , it's floods in Vegas now.
Hey , it's floods in Vegas now.
I sure don't. My friend is doing the listening for me. I'll ask him.
ADMIN: Not sure if there's room in the header, but a second Texas town has suffered a hit: Anna, TX in Collin County. Childress is in Childress County.
The US gets 75% of the world's tornados.
I'm hearing that the NWS is releasing the storm chasers in Collin County as the storm has moved into the next county. Tornado seems to have gone up into the clouds at the moment.
Why is that, I wonder?
Radio Operators are now reporting extensive damage in Anna and a lowering is now being spotted in Trenton
Well, the next county would be Tarrant, wouldn't it? Keep safe, Txsleuth! I'm about to turn in.
Bumping to the top.
I have relatives in the Texas Panhandle. Amarillo and surrounding area. I attended a family reunion in Childress.
Sorry, FRiend. He doesn't.
It's the Gulf and the flat plains of Texas: "Tornado Alley." A European meteorologist once pointed out to me that that's the price we pay for growing all the world's food.
How frightening for residents. I live in California, and I know I hear all about how we have earthquakes, but those tornado's really scare me to even see on TV. Prayers for all in the path.
tornadoes do weird things. when the big tornado hit Lubbock in the 70s, it stretched/lifted a 20-story building and then placed it back for long enough so that the top-floor's floor lenth silk drapes were actually inserted between layers of bricks so that the hem was flapping in the wind outside the building despite the fact that the drapes were still hanging from the curtain rods.
At least 1 home destroyed in the tornado east of Anna, but no injuries reported there. However the homeowner is now being hit by all 4 DFW TV stations' reporters.
This is all
I can find for now. The hail was reported from TWC earlier.
Prayers up for all those in TX affected by these storms, esp. our FReeper friends.
Good night everyone. Stay safe.
Several homes reported destroyed near Westminster, and reports of people trapped.
Thanks
Thanks! On the OKC news they said it was really bad -- hope there were no injuries. Sounds like they took a direct hit and looks like we are about to get more rain.
Seeing as you got no answer, I'll answer for you...
The tornado storm over Anna, TX was moving east into Fannin County along the Fannin/Hunt County line.
Tarrant County (Fort Worth) and Dallas County were well south of the t-storm by about 20 miles.
This storm is now almost completely out of range of DFW radar in Red River County which is near the intersection of Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas in far NE Texas.
