Boycott & Backlash
National Review ^ | May 01, 2006 | Mark Krikorian

Posted on 05/01/2006 11:05:04 AM PDT by claudiustg

Today’s May Day general strike by illegal aliens and their supporters should help clarify the Senate’s immigration deliberations. The question before senators, as they seek to pass an immigration bill before Memorial Day, no longer concerns the specifics of policy—how much border fencing, the period of work for guestworkers, etc. The question now is whether the government of the United States will give in to the mob.

...snip...

The more mainstream pro-amnesty forces understand the potential for an intensified anti-illegal backlash from today’s marches, which is why many did not join in. One amnesty supporter said the May Day offensive “could further polarize the debate and make reform supporters seem anti-American just as lobbyists are trying to persuade lawmakers in Washington to pass a bill that would benefit immigrants.”

This concern, though, is too little, too late. At this point, an immigration vote in the Senate will not, and should not, be about the particulars of policy. Rather, a vote for anything other than an enforcement-only bill would represent a surrender to the mob, a capitulation to the illegal-alien will to power. There will be plenty of time in coming years for Congress to debate the legitimate questions of legalization or guestworker programs—but now it’s time for senators to push back and pass an enforcement-only bill, to make clear that in the United States, laws are made in the Capitol, not in the streets.

I have said many times in the past that these people need to be called what they really are: illegal invaders of our country. They are not an "immigrant" problem. Language is so important here because it misleads to simply say "immigrant". I for one am glad they are protesting because it shows what a mob mentality they have and our government should not be making deals with these "terrorists" either. They cause many problems from what I have seen.

And it will be perceived as such, not only by the domestic enemy (stupidly allowed to flout immigration laws), but by foreign enemies as well.

I just heard on the news, one protestor in Chicago said that he came here illegally because he didn't know how else to come to this country. Another said that he doesn't like the term "illegal alien" because "no human being should be thought of as illegal." Gag me!

I did not shop this weekend. Instead, I spent 200$ at the grocery store for just that reason. Except for Milk. THe Oregon Dairy Farmers association publicly supported the May Day Idiocy, so I did not buy milk.

If you have the opportunity today, GO BUY STUFF! Show these fools that they have NO ETHICAL RIGHT to protest.

Lets see: Illegals go to the street, protest, get what they want. The logical extension of this idiocy is me going to Bank 1 in town, parking myself in their lobby and demanding $250,000 in any denomination bills. BY their reasoning I should get "my" money.Right??

You DO realize that the only way the economic impact of the criminal rights marches will be reported is if there is a big pro criminal result. If folk actually spend more in counter protests such as to make Monday a great day for retailers, restaurants and elsewhere, the data will never, ever see the light of day or media publication.

It is against the agenda.

To extend that reasoning even further: If "illegal aliens" can choose to disobey a law, as a citizen I also should get to choose one----the one I choose to disobey is "income tax". I choose NOT to pay income tax. Now, let the idiots in Washington figure out how to give these "demonstrators" social security, medical care, education, etc., without my tax dollars!!

Let them boycott. Who among us want the law breakers in our country. I am so fed up with this bunch of arrogant law breakers, breaking into our country and to have the gall to demand rights.
Please!!! email your Congressmen, let them know we expect the laws to be upheld. If they are not willing to enforce the laws, lets elect someone who will.
Now is the time to fight.
I can't imagine going into any other country in the world illegally and protesting to stay.
Who do they think they are?
Where are our lawmakers???

Sorry to go on so much, but this 71 year old has had it.

I'm with you, it is shameful that it has ever been allowed to get to this point. I heard one "demonstrator" in Denver say that, even though he came here illegally, he's not worried because "the police in Denver can't stop people just because they think they may be illegal. They have to have broken some other law."

This is absolutely EMBARASSING!

Or like the ones in my hometown sleeping it off. 11 Hispanics stabbed in bar room brawl. One fight in two parts of town.

From www.wbir.com

Eleven stabbed in weekend bar brawl A weekend bar brawl ended with eleven people being stabbed. Police say a fight broke out at South Knoxville's Las Arcos Bar. During the fight, one Hispanic men was stabbed. After that, the bar's security kicked everyone out. The same fight picked back up across town on West Emerald Avenue, and 10 other Hispanic men were stabbed. All 11 victims were taken to area hospitals. Officers say two are said to be in serious condition. One person is being detained in connection with the stabbings. Police are looking for two other suspects.

Yeah, I remember seeing the signs last week that proclaimed "This is OUR continent".

I'll tell you what, you arrogant self-rightous drains of my country: You can have your continent back but first you have to return Spanish to the Spaniards and re-learn your own native tongue.

As per the illegals who actually want to CONTRIBUTE: Get in line, get ten letters of reference from a US Citizen who wants to sponsor you as someone who will contribute, then go serve in the military first - for 2 years.

The question now is whether the government of the United States will give in to the mob.

The Senate will.

Will the House?

At any rate, I've already pledged not to join GOTV this fall for the Republicans.

As of right now I do not intend to vote for them either. They have yet to give me a reason to vote for them. Neither have the Democrats. I'm open to a change of stance on this issue, but legalizing illegal aliens with no enforcement of the border (yeah, McCain, I'm using the term "alien") and pledging a $100 gas rebate ain't getting me back on the reservation. Nor is the pitiful offerance of ONE Judge when they should ALL be making their way through a Senate vote if not for people like DEWINE up for re-election this year.

Bought groceries, postage stamps and items at Walgreen's today. We did need milk, but we ALWAYS need milk and our local Dairy hasn't said "Boo" about this boycott one way or another.

Hope I helped the cause. ;)

FWIW, I saw plenty of Hispanic guys working construction in town today (we're building a new bank) and I saw two Hispanic guys driving around in their lawn care truck, so things appear to be pretty normal around here.

Not this part of it. If they want to have "their continent" back they're still stuck with Mexico.
OUR part of the continent had/has other indigenous peoples, not descendents of the Inca, Aztec, Maya, etc.

Maybe they should spend less time protesting and more time in school.

This will be resolved by our vote. If the people are fed up, they will let Congress know. The wimpy cowards need to be voted out.
We have the power if we stick together,
Please, we need a strong leader to get our laws enforced.

Imagine someone breaking into your home and refusing to leave, to tell you "Hell no, I won't go". This is the same thing. I heard the protesters on TV today, yelling "Hell no, I won't go". This should signal every American to act.
They broke into our country!

I saw that on local TV.

There's a lot of illegals up in the Greeneville/Erwin area. Read the local newspaper and you'll see a lot more crime also, committed by folks with Hispanic names. Although the Hispanics are a small percentage of the population there, they show up in the crime reports quite often.

Also drunken driving, which worries me. Don't get me wrong, I support legal immigration, but these coming here illegally apparently don't pay any attention to other laws either.

I find the La Raza line that it is their continent amusing. Native Americans don't take to that very kindly. They see La Raza as descendants of the Conquistadors that forcibly herded their peopel into Missions before the whites herded them onto reservations.
And since when was going back to human sacrifice of the Aztecs so great?

I got a twenny says they cave and I'm giving odds.

ok, YOU WIN. What's worse, is OK, they win.

I think that as reasonable people, all we can hope for this term is a tighter border. There will be no deportation, except for those dumb enough to get themselves arrested, or in other trouble. There will be attrition, if we can get employer sanctions, and especially if they can't get back in.

There will be some action in some places to stop licenses, welfare, free medicine at ERs, etc., but not much. Folks, the damage is done. After all the "sturm und Drang", the only thing we are going to accomplish is delay becoming part of Latin America for a generation.

Just got back from California. 52% and climbing. The rest of the country? Give it 50 years.
