A 45- to 50-pound grass carp, more commonly known as flying Asian carp, was caught in the Lower St. Croix River earlier this month, fueling concern about several types of Asian carp that are making their way up the Mississippi River from southern states, the Pioneer Press is reporting.

A commercial fisherman caught the carp April 7 near Prescott, Wis., Jay Rendall, invasive species program coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, told the St. Paul paper.

Grass carp are one of four species of Asian carp that were imported into the United States in the 1960s and '70s, escaped into the lower Mississippi basin, and now threaten fisheries by consuming food normally eaten by native fish and wildlife.

The others are bighead, black and silver carp, with the silver carp achieving a measure of notoriety for its ability to leap from the water when startled

I wouldn't want to get clocked by a flying bottom feeder.

I saw a video awhile back. It was of two guys in a boat flashing a spotlight across the water and thousands of fish were flying through the air.

Not to "carp" on the issue, but skeet fishing sounds like fun.

I thought Canada Geese were the flying carp.

Anyhow, I wonder if these grass carp eat Eurasian Milfoil. If so, I know a couple of lakes I'd like to plant some in.

Good with hush puppies and slaw?

Not only do you have to pick out bones while eating them, you also have to be careful about shotgun pellets.

I saw a show about invasive species on TV. One segment was on these fish. The TV crew ran an electric current through the water and the river came alive with jumping fish.

I thought Canada Geese were the flying carp crappers.

It's not really a solution. They eat everything and muddy up the water rooting around in the mud.

Where the fish jump into your boat: http://media.putfile.com/Incredible-Fishing-Video

I've had a smaller scale experience with finger mullet while flounder gigging at night. They see the light and go nuts jumping after it. Kind of weired at first to be out in the dark marsh and have these things hitting you.

"They eat everything and muddy up the water rooting around in the mud."

Every time my dad ever caught one he would hit it with a hammer and toss it back into the water lol. With carp we have a catch-smash and release policy.
