New York Is Losing People at Fastest Pace in America
New York Sun ^ | April 20, 2006 | DANIELA GERSON

New York State is losing more residents than any other state in the country, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics released early today.

Based on surveys taken between 2000 and 2004, the figures show that New York replaced California as the net migration outflow leader, with an average of 182,886 people leaving a year, nearly double California's average for the same period.

California led the nation between 1990 and 2000.

The findings track the state-to-state movement in America.

They do not include international immigration numbers.

The New York City metropolitan region - which includes Long Island and parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania - also leads the country in migration outflow, with an average of 211,014 leaving a year.

The number is higher than the state figure because many of those leaving the metropolitan region resettle in other areas of New York.

Despite the tremendous outflow, the overall city population, at 8.2 million, is growing due to increases in international immigration and a birthrate that is greater than the death rate.

"There are three reasons people are leaving: taxes, taxes, and taxes," a Republican candidate for governor, John Faso, said.

His recommended solution: "Cut taxes, reduce spending, put the state budget on a diet."

Another Republican candidate, William Weld, also stressed the need to cut taxes.

"For New York to retain its young people and talented work force, it must corral and bridle New York's government spending, cut taxes, and reduce imposed business costs such as health care and worker's compensation,"...

These are simple changes that will provide the key to keeping our seed corn: good jobs at good wages."

To paraphrase Margaret Thatcher, the New York dem/socialist party is soon going to run out of people to tax.

Governor Pataki was first elected on a promise to cut taxes, too. But first, he had to straighten a few things out . . . .

I'm one of them. It's too damned expensive to build a life in the NYC area unless you come from serious money and get it handed to you. And the quality of life compared with, say, Virginia, is not so good. Plus the government is sickeningly corrupt, it makes Louisiana look clean.

I would have guessed that having TWO repulsive and moronic Senators would have had something to do with the mass migration from the Big Apple, but it's not listed in the article. Go figure! :0)

It says alot about the voters when the two senators get re-elected.

It will say even more about the voters when they choose the next Governor.

No one is moving to Boston, either.

Mass is number 2.

Yes and no. More to the point, is that New Yorkers are sick of the routine corruption of state and local politics. NY at every level is run strictly for the politicians, their families and their friends. Republican or Democrat, makes no difference. People are moving out, because they can see how futile it is to expect any honesty in NY.

The taxes are high because they fund the payoffs necessary to the personal enrichment of politicians here, and the sky's the limit.

In NY, "legal" corruption has been perfected, and there will be no change any time in the near future.

They love to come to Florida because we have no state tax. However, they keep voting democrat, so they can raise our taxes.
Makes sense to me.....NOT!

Pataki is pretty pathetic but they could do worse. We left NY in 2003 and never looked back. The only things that I miss about NY are the bagels and pizza. (Family and friends either left before us, or are on their way out of there.)

Yep. They leave New York and come to central New Jersey.

Then they vote for the same types of politicos that drove them out of New York. Turning New Jersey from a moderate Republican state 20 years ago to a flaming Lib state that it is today.

I wish they would all just move to Florida.

Based on the official census figures, the number of foreign born residents in NY rose from 2,882,756 in 1990 to 3,804,431. The biggest foreign born group is the Dominicans who went from 235,790 in 1990 to 415,026 in 2000. The next largest groups are from China, former USSR, Jamaica, and Mexico. The number of Mexicans increased almost fourfold from 43,570 in 1990 to 170,386 in 2000.

In 1990 Mexicans were the largest group of foreign born residents in 18 states. In 2000, they were the largest group in 30 states.
