Phyllis Schlafly to Speak at Agnes Scott College (4/27, 7:30 PM)
Agnes Scott College ^ | 4/19/06

ATLANTA (April 19, 2006) – Conservative spokeswoman Phyllis Schlafly will deliver a lecture on “The Failures of Feminism” on Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Hall’s Maclean Auditorium.

“We’ve wanted to bring a conservative speaker to campus for a while,” said Mary Szelistowski, chairman of the Agnes Scott College Republicans, which invited Schlafly to speak. “I’ve heard Phyllis Schlafly speak twice within the last four months, and I really enjoyed hearing her, and so we thought that she would be a great match for Agnes Scott.”

The ASCR membership totals about 100, with 15-20 active members. The student group is hoping for anywhere from 100-300 people to come out for Schlafly’s remarks. Sponsorship support is being provided by The Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, Szelistowski said.

Schlafly has been a national leader of the conservative movement since the publication of her best-selling 1964 book, “A Choice Not an Echo.” She has been a leader of the pro-family movement since 1972, when she started her national volunteer organization now called Eagle Forum.

In a 10-year campaign, Schlafly led the pro-family movement to defeat the effort to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. An articulate opponent of the feminist movement, she appears in debate on college campuses more frequently than any other conservative, according to her online biography reports at www.eagleforum.org. Among her many accolades, she was named one of the 100 most important women of the 20th century by “Ladies' Home Journal.”

The event is free and open to the public and no ticket is required. Additional information may be obtained by calling 404-471-6430.

I'm a member of the Agnes Scott College Republicans.. we're bringing Phyllis to campus, and would like anyone that's available to come out to this.

We're trying to be silenced by the liberals/feminists on campus, and they're already planning protests and walkouts during her speech.

If you want more details, you can contact Mary Szelistowski at mszelistowski@agnesscott.edu.

Thanks!

I remember "Agnes Scott College" from the movie "A Man Called Peter" that is where Catherine Marshall was in school when she met her future husband.

She also wrote the book, I think it was called "Christy", they had a tv show about it.

Thanks for the announcement. My husband and I will be there. We live in Grant Park, so we're close by. We've been admirers of Mrs. Schlafly for many years and look forward to hearing her.

And I'm sure there will be many protestors. I attended Karen Hughes' lecture last year and the protestors were up and down the street leading to the campus. Fortunately Karen was allowed to speak without interruption.

And welcome to FR, a new member since "Apr. 21, 2006".

She correctly predicted homosexual 'marrage' way back in the 70's. Everyone laughed at her.

We will know the measure of Agnes Scott by the way in which they treat her.

If they respect her they will earn respect for themselves if they do not they deserve no note of respect from others.

Is the ASC Republicans a new group? I don't remember them while I was a student there.

There is also a counter protest in the works. Agnes Scott is an extrememly liberal college. Watch for a very large protest. I'm going to ping this thread to the Georgia forum.

I'm going to try to come; I'm in Dunwoody. Any suggestions on parking?

I have to assume the event will be in the auditorium on S McDonough St. You can park right across the street in the AS parking deck. Otherwise, the Decatur High School parking lot is just across the RR tracks.

Visitor parking is on the loop on E. College Ave, but that usually fills up pretty quickly for events so I'm sure they'll have the parking deck on S. McDonough open for visitors.

Also, the lecture is in the auditorium on the SECOND floor, there's something else being held in the auditorium on the first floor.

If everything is full you can probably park in the high school parking lot. It's on the North side of the RR tracks, to the left of the high school at the top of the hill.

A repost of my summary of the talk, from the FR Georgia forum:

Phyllis Schlafly was great. She basically gave a brief history of the feminist movement, summarizing what they stood for, contrasting it with what she stood for. This included talking about how she organized opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment.

It was wonderful hearing about so much conservative political history, especially since what you tended to hear of it at the time was filtered through the Old Media, unless you were an Eagle Forum / Phyllis Schlafly newletter subscriber.

The audience questions were a riot. The typical question started with an assertion of something Mrs. Schlafly had supposedly said, followed by a question that basically attacked this supposed assertion. Of course, the assertions were pure strawmen, so they were immediately torn to shreds.

What a thrill to see Mrs. Schlafly. I'm old enough to remember her battle against ERA. It probably would have passed with out her. Does anyone remember how many more state were needed to ratify the ERA? As I recall it wasn't very many.

Amazingly she is 81 y.o. and sharp as a tack. She was more than a match for the mostly feminists audience.

Afterward my husband got her to sign his 1964 edition of A Choice Not an Echo. A real treasure.

A few pics I took at the event, nothing special. Linked for the bandwidth impaired.

Wide shot

Podium zoom.

I think she had to have been thinking "Oh, my, not another silly strawman question" here.

Wow, thanks for those pictures! Those are really good.
I'm glad you both had a good time at her lecture last night; I thought she handled the questions really well.

Thanks for coming out, we weren't expecting such a huge turnout at all! It was pretty amazing.

I'm about to take Phyllis to the airport in a minute..
I'll tell her y'all really enjoyed it. :)

Oh yes.. it was a protest by the feminist group and lesbian group at ASC.

They called themselves the "Feminist Outlawz" and had signs.. some examples were "JESUS IS NOT A CONTRACEPTIVE", "PHYLLIS, SUPPORT YOUR GAY SON", and another poster with a picture of a vagina and the words "THIS IS NOT AN INCUBATOR."

Oh yeah, and they also had the chant that went like this.. "SEXIST, RACIST, ANTI-GAY, PHYLLIS SOUNDS LIKE THE KKK."

They weren't very creative..

Besides econnell's comments, pretty much the entire Q&A was an anti-Schlafly protest. You've seen my comments on how that went.

God bless you, econnell. You're truly on the front lines of the battle between good and evil.

I've never been in a room with so many angry feminists. (I guess raising six kids and helping my husband in his business has sheltered me.) They were angry at men, angry at babies for interferring with their careers, angry at the government for not having enough programs to help them, and even, it appeared to me, angry that God made them a woman.

Mrs. Schlafly was giving them wonderful life lessons. She told them that a career may not be fulfulling, that they may actually enjoy being a wife and mother, and that their angry attitude will hurt them.

Did they listen? It appeared they didn't. The tone during the Q & A was very rude toward Mrs. Schlafly. I felt like standing up and telling them to be more respectful. Mrs. Schlafly has accomplished more in her life they any one in the room will ever do.

On a happy note, I did get to meet Catherine Davis, the GOP candidate running against Cynthia McKinney. Ms. Davis is a great person and deserves our support.

The case with many feminists I believe.

Phyllis Schlafly is a great lady, and the feminists and her MSM detractors aren't fit to touch the hem of her skirt!
