Governor Suggests Rumsfeld Resign (NM - Richardson)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | April 17, 2006 | Michael Coleman

Posted on 04/17/2006 6:46:24 PM PDT by CedarDave

WASHINGTON— Gov. Bill Richardson on Sunday said Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld should resign, in part because "our policy in Iraq is just not working."

"My view is the secretary should step aside," Richardson said at the outset of a 10-minute interview on "Face the Nation."

Richardson, a Democrat who is viewed as a likely presidential contender in 2008, said the fact that six military generals have publicly called for Rumsfeld's resignation...is significant.

"We should listen to what these generals are saying," Richardson said. "These are six distinguished military officers who were involved in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. They basically are saying that Secretary Rumsfeld ...didn't listen to them.

"This reaches a new level of not being willing to admit mistakes and change policy that is just not working," Richardson added.

Richardson said America should announce a date for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq sometime early next year...

Asked how we would handle Iran and its nuclear ambitions, Richardson said he would take a "totally different" approach than the Bush administration. He said the idea that the United States should consider pre-emptive military action in Iran— at least at this early stage— is "ridiculous."

"We cannot tolerate nuclear weapons in Iran," Richardson said, but he added that military force isn't the only way to prevent the Iranians from developing weapons of mass destruction.

"I would engage the Iranians directly," said Richardson, a former United Nations ambassador and secretary of the Department of Energy under President Clinton. "What we need to do is use diplomacy, coercive diplomacy, potentially sanctions ... instead of talking about using military options...

Asked if he plans to run for president, Richardson paused, smiled and said he is intent on winning re-election as governor of New Mexico in 2008.

I guess the FAX machine was switched "ON" in the governor's mansion Sunday morning so Bill could receive this week's edition of DNC talking points on Rumsfeld.

Talking about diplomacy, how much good have Bill's several trips to North Korea done to stop that nation's push for nuclear weapons?

Richardson is the most overrated of all the candidates.

A total phoney who loves himself dearly.

He'll tank early.

I'm shocked that Richardson would, given a chance to espouse lib Dem talking points, do just that.

shocked.

What is incredible to me is that the same people who didn't want Bush to go into Iraq without proof positive of WMDs are now "hawkish" ...except they really aren't because they send memos (through the press) warning Bush NOT to take Iran out...
My head is spinning with the idiocy of them all

Drive through his state sometime.Be prepared for numerous roadblocks so the police can fish for whatever.Wife and I both considered moving there to be closer to the kids. Three visits woke us up.Now,we dont even visit. Those ex Generals could get a good job there on the police force. They could make rules as they go along.Seems the police do!

Richardson ought to resign for repeatedly lying about being a draft pick of the Kansas City A's in 1966. What a putz.

Good point. Even better when you consider Richardson was Clinton's Energy Secretary and presided over numerous spy scandals at labs in NM and elsewhere. Yeah. He'd be a great CiC.

"We should listen to what these generals are saying," Richardson said. "These are six distinguished military officers who were involved in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. They basically are saying that Secretary Rumsfeld ...didn't listen to them.

Two points:

1) There are thousands of generals who aren't aligned with the 7 dissenters.

2) Rummy has admitted that mistakes were made. Most non-military folks do not understand that despite all of the best laid plans, when the first shot is fired in combat, conditions change.

In summary, Richardson is an ass-breath.

Approximately 4500 or more retired Generals.

Another 900 or so on active duty.

But all we here is about 6 of them.

Anyone wonder why?

It was the "right thing" to do for the good of the country.

What role did Anthony "The Protocols of" Zinni play in the Iraq invasion, Bill?

Other then from 1996 until late 2000 constantly state both publicly (and more importantly during classified sessions) that Saddam was a very serious threat that needed to be removed. Gen Zinni also continually stated he believed Saddam had WMDs and that even without them he posed a very serious threat.

Gen Zinni has sadly (very sadly to many who served with him) shown himself to be a very small man.

The reality is SecDef Rumsfeld has been the best SecDef in the last 50 years and has been an exceptional leader in making the tough calls and making our military more effective.

Sure he bruised some egos in the process. Tough sh*t (these two, three and four star's are constantly doing just that on their on turf....a few of them obviously just don't have the stones to take it when it is shot back at them).

SecDef Rumsfeld has the overwhelming support of the military as a whole. Without question.

Maybe Bill Richardson should expand our knowledge a little bit more about his job offer to Monica Lewinsky.

Or, failing that, he should just shut his fat effing mouth.

An amused spectator interviews Bill Richardson (pardon my French in this interview, mass55th):

aas: "So, let me get this straight, Bill. You're asking a member of President Bush's cabinet to resign, yes?"
BR: "Yes"
aas: "So, Bill - did you ever ask any of former president Clinton's cabinet to resign over their poor judgement and abetting actions during the impeachment wars?
BR: "No, I guess I didn't..."
aas: "So, Bill - when you interviewed Ms. Lewinsky, did her breath smell like Bill Clinton's a** or ejaculate?"
