Wal-Mart Eyes Site in Flushing, Then Decides To Look Elsewhere
NY Sun ^ | April 12, 2006 | DAVID LOMBINO

Wal-Mart appears to have backed out of a plan to move into a vacant retail space in Queens, a location that likely would have bypassed City Council review of a new store.

It's the second location that America's largest retailer has been known to have eyed in Queens, and the second time in 14 months that Wal-Mart has backed down.

The Arkansas-based chain has no store in New York City. Shoppers who want to patronize Wal-Mart have to go to New Jersey or Long Island, which reap the sales tax revenues. Labor unions and some politicians in New York have opposed the presence of a Wal-Mart in the city, criticizing the company's treatment of its employees.

Ms. Alvarado said Ms. Quinn believes it is "absolutely unacceptable" for Wal-Mart to build a store anywhere in the five boroughs without consulting with the City Council first, even it is not legally required to do so.

I wonder if Walmart could legally put a surcharge on their cash register charges/receipts that would identify the various costs including increased hospitalization benefits, etc. in the union infested/socialist infected jurisdictions?

I thought you were supposed to look before Flushing (you may have dropped your wallet).

The site has 183,743 square feet of retail space spread over four floors

and there's the reason Wal-Mart doesn't want it. The average Super Center has 200,000 sq.ft. on one floor.

I liked it better when the City Council was a toothless collection of political also-rans.

:(

J Liu is in the pockets of the unions. The funny thing is, he doesnt shop in Flusing! THere once was an attempt at some decent stores, but now its almost all Chinese run dollar stores and groceries. Caldor collapsed a few years ago, but they have never been able to get someone else to take the site. There is also a weak attempt at a mall, but again, it is only visited by Chinese for the food court and most of the booths(not even stores) are empty. Me and the wife are really thinking about getting out and moving to Manhattan.

These guys make $90,000 a year, which is pretty good for part-time employees.

I think he can do his shopping at some more upscale venues.

:-)

Maybe in Illinois or Alaska, but you're not going to find 200,000 sqft too easily in New York City.

Costco is pretty big, although I don't know if it's nearly as large as one of these Wal-Mart behemoths.

It's located in a non-residential strip of Sunset Park.

A pain in the neck to get to by bus.

MAN! The LAWNGILANERS make the Maryland DEMS.look almost Smaht!
What is it with an American Company presenting tax revenue and employment opportunities to an area that is literally dying, and it is seen as evil?
We have got to get rid of WELFARE.. that's what's truly evil. End of story. Americans employed at intelligent wages, Illegals go away!

I know, but I have never seen a Wal-Mart that's on more than one floor.

I bet it's even more of a pain in the neck trying to get a case of toilet paper on that bus.

Yeah you can. Build a Wal-Mart skyscraper.
