The world today is full of evils that compete for our outraged attention. In Sudan, genocide is underway. Closer to home, in Castro's Cuba, political prisoners languish in fetid jails. But at Macalester College, some students are crusading against the friendly folks at Coca-Cola through an initiative called the "Campaign to Stop Killer Coke," the latest cause du jour on "progressive" campuses.
Last week, the students announced that Macalester's Social Responsibility Committee had voted unanimously to ban Coke from vending machines and fountain-drink locations on campus. Macalester's president must sign off on the ban for it to take effect.
Mac's Student Labor-Action Coalition (SLAC) charges Coke with a loose and shifting set of allegations. The claims grow from the death of a labor leader at a Coke plant in Colombia 10 years ago, and the deaths of seven other Colombian Coke workers.
Here's the context: Colombia -- one of the world's largest suppliers of cocaine -- is torn by civil war between murderous factions that fund themselves through drug trafficking. Many thousands have died in the conflict.
Danny Kaplan, a math professor and former chair of the Social Responsibility Committee, is among those at Macalester who aren't impressed with SLAC's charges about Coca-Cola's culpability. "The evidence is so slight, so implausible and in some cases so silly," he says, "that it's clear the allegations are politically motivated."
Ah pesky facts. For many activists, one suspects, Coke's real sin is being a big U.S. corporation, a "multinational" -- guilty until proven innocent.
Coke's attempts to refute the charges have fallen on deaf activist ears. The company points out that it is one of the most heavily unionized multinationals in the world, and that Coke managers, as well as union members, have been murdered in Colombia.

They can have my Coke when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.
That reminds me, I am running low on diet coke, I'd better go to Wal-Mart and get some, that way I can piss off the socialists twice in one trip.
Killer Coke!
How silly.
Make it a hattrick and get some ammo too!
And don't forget to use your Credit/Debit Card from Chase, Citibank, or Bank of America, or one of those huge banks. Go for the hat trick!
I guess Granny Smith and her apple pies, along with Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts are about to be picketed...
Coke plant in Colombia - Ok now iam confrused
Fruitcake.
"They can have my Coke when they pry it from my cold, dead hands."
Amen. Nectar of the gods.
"So people who don't like to shop at WM are Socialists?!"
Exactly where in his post did he say or infer that? Perhaps YOU are the fruitcake.
Doesn't pepsi have the same market share as Coke?
Is Pepsi anti-american? Is that they they are never mentioned or just because Pepsi is just bad Coke?
You missed the point.
Fruitcake.

pop, fizzzzzz, glug, glug, glug, glug, glug, mmmm good, bring me another please.
I thought the MST was a pinko paper that would accept any 'activist' notion, no matter how ridiculous. What happened?
Uh, and Pepsi's not a huge, multi-national firm?
Just wait until they find out that Coke mixes much better with liquor than Pepsi does. Who ever heard of a Bacardi & Pepsi? Ick.
Wally World is my second home. Where else can you buy shotgun shells at 3a.m. during dove season! Oh yeah, I can also pick up a case of COKE while I'm there!
Diet Coke. Sweetened with aspartame. Awesome! Piss off the health fascists as well.
That a college is doing this adds to the fright level of what is happening in academia. .
. . ..'bird flu' pales in comparison to the dangerous epidemic of mindless Leftism that has taken over college campuses.
. . .I hope money talks. . .and that these institutions hear a whole lot less when they make those calls to their alumni for 'annual giving'. . .
the Members of the Politburo Standing Committee. . .. . .
So. ..what ELSE does this committee do. . .
Caused a big stir. She had to apologize. But you could tell she meant to say it.
I prefer Coke.
Dangit I KNEW I fogot something today at lunch.
I prefer Coke made with real cane juice (sugar), not metal tasting diabetes HFCS.
If you are a member of SLAC are you a SLACker?
My Jesuit-run high school has a faction (complete with unshaven beards, communists, and whacko-lefties) pushing this cause. I can't understand it.
Does anyone know if Coke has been convicted of anything? I'd like to use that as a response, but don't want to sound foolish? Or a place to find that info out?
Thx
Coke is especially tasty mixed with rum made by underaged children in non-union sweat shops.
Also, just for the record, I did buy Coke when they were "protesting" outside the machines (altho i sorely prefer pepsi's taste), and so did many other students. I think Coke sales were up that day at my HS.
Here is Coke's real sin.
Greater sin does not exist, so few know the pleasures of slipping a real dime (silver) into a real coke machine & sipping a real Coke.
-Macalester's Social Responsibility Committee had voted unanimously to ban Coke from vending machines and fountain-drink locations on campus.-
Wow. Really changing the world there, Macalester.
Once modern American corporations leave the territory of the US and those parts of the world under protection of the US, they are on their own and have to adopt protective coloring to blend in. If they don't adopt, they will be barred from vending machines.
Coke's new Vault Zero energy drink is fantastic. It seems to be taking off in my area.
Is Coca-Cola being eaten by its own kind now?

"That reminds me, I am running low on diet coke, I'd better go to Wal-Mart and get some ."
Brilliant response - the Libs really do hate success when it comes to people who aren't "their kind" don't they????
Fruitcake

moonbat
I live on Diet Coke with Cherry, and Diet Coke with Lemon.
Regards, Ivan
1. People like me who actually like quality products, good service, and don't want to watch welfare mothers beating their children in aisle seven.
2. Moonbat Socialists who hate any capitalist enterprise that they can't control via unions.
3. More patriotic than thou John Birch Society types who whine about Wal Mart "sellin' goods from Red China" without realizing that every other store sells Chinese products and that you can find many products not made in China if you want to pay a little extra.
Its fine for aspirin and cosmetics, but do you really want to be known for shopping at the trashiest place on Earth?
Moron.
Cheapness is as cheapness does.
Please..step away from the crackpipe..some of us have taste than to stand in line behind a plethora cheapskates.
Moron.
One's sign up date doesn't have a lot to do with ones civility or knowledge, you just proved that. You started the personal attacks, not me.
Personal attacks? That means nothing if they are justified. Moron. I was here long before you were, ignoramus.
Again with the name calling personal attacks. It destroys any creditability you may have thought you had. I am not impressed with your "sign up date" there are many people here who have been here a lot longer than you, yet they remain civil. That may well have more to do with the decency of the person rather than their length of time here.
Do you really think that because you have been here longer than I have that it somehow gives you great wisdom, knowledge or insight?
You misread my original post and inferred that I implied that anyone who did not like Wal-Mart was a socialist. Go back and re read it and you will find that I didn't say that at all. I am not the only poster who has pointed that out to you though am I? Of course the other posters who pointed it out to you may have "sign up dates" later than yours, so that makes their remarks invalid doesn't it?
I don't know why I am bothering to respond to your latest attack, I don't usually. It just isn't worth my time. I have read some of your posting history and found that I am in good company as the recipient of your venom, you have leveled it at a lot of people I respect. I won't respond or even read further posts from you to me, so have at it with your vile remarks.
well i have to admit...i love coke...always have always will...and no i dont like pepsi...
