Government offices to be closed Friday for Cesar Chavez Day

SAN DIEGO -- Courts and San Diego city and county government offices will be closed Friday for Cesar Chavez Day.

Refuse and recyclables will be collected one day later in the city of San Diego, according to the city's Mona Favorite-Hill. Garbage collection will return to its normal schedule on Monday.

Tickets won't be issued for expired parking meters or parking in areas scheduled for street sweeping, Favorite-Hill said. All other parking restrictions will be in effect and enforced.

All city and county branch libraries will be closed, as will the city of San Diego's community service centers, police storefronts, recreation centers and pools.

Balboa Park, Mission Bay and Torrey Pines municipal golf courses will be open, at holiday rates, according to Favorite-Hill.

County parks, preserves, community centers and teen centers will stay open tomorrow, according to the county's Luis Monteagudo Jr.

Essential services, including the Sheriff's Department, will also operate as normal, Monteagudo said.

Cesar Chavez Day was established to mark the birthday of the late founder of the United Farm Workers of America. Chavez was credited with helping improve labor conditions and pay for agricultural workers.

I think Chili Rellenos and Huevos Rancheros have recently ceased to be my favorite food.

Back to meat and taters, I guess.

San Diego is going belly-up and the bureaucrats designate another day off with pay for themselves. The public isn't deserving of endless paid vacations.

Last week I heard that Denver municipal offices were closed to honor Ceasar Chavez. Don't know for sure but that's the word I heard.

Cesar Chavez opposed illegal aliens because they drove wages down.

LOL

Their little commi hero didn't want the criminals here either.

Seems like California...or Mexifornia, according to Victor Davis Hansen...has already given up trying to stay "AMERICAN".

What a dumb excuse for a holiday! There are several days that are much more real holidays that are ignored...

At one time old Cesar Chavez did some good for the farm workers here in Calif, also tried to keep the Illegals out too,but I too think it dumb to name a holiday after him, unfortunately the coast is where all the LIB's live, and tips the election balance to the blue side..

Growing up on 120 acres of grapes in the Central Valley (part of what my dad owned), I got a first hand look at Chavez and his mob tactics. It was a very scary time when he and his crew rolled into town during harvest time. They threatened the workers with raping and murdering their wives and daughters if the workers didn't join his union. Many of the workers were scared and talked to my dad about what was going on.

Under Chavez's orders, his followers slashed tractor tires and burned parts of crops. My dad gave me strict orders not to leave the house.

One day, Chavez's thugs slashed the wrong tractor tires and burned the wrong yard. They had unkowingly attacked many Japanese farmers in our community. Those farmers cried racism and got it all publicized. The pictures of burned tractors in the papers was enough to drive Chavez and his thugs out of our area.

Sorry this is so long, but after all these years this is all still very vivid. None of us felt safe (including the migrant workers) and now this guy is honored? A very sore spot with me!
