My 84 year old dad thinks its polite to say colored people. back in his day it was.

"A nigger is a black you don't like." - Axel Rose
No one should call anyone else a name. It's not right and we should all stop. Everyone. Period.
When i was growing up in the 70's the black kids in my high school preferred to be called "negroes". It was out with "colored" and the N-word, and in with Negro.
Here's the answer.

Sister James Marie's class, circa 1962.
Whiner: Sister, he called me 'stupid'.
SJM: (slaps up the back of whiner's head)
Now go write this 50 times:
Sticks and stones may break my bones,
but NAMES CAN NEVER hurt me.
Have it done by tomorrow.
...But I ask you what is the difference between calling someone black or nigger?...
One thing I don't understand, though, is that "colored people" is considered insulting, yet "people of color" is perfectly acceptable.

Yes, you are right.
"colored" was a normal way to refer to Blacks, as late as the 60s.
I am sure that there were variations, depending on where one lived.
I remember traveling to Wisconsin on business in the late 60s, and I met people who had never seen a black person, in person!
I remember as a little kid being called a, 'kike' by kids in the neighborhood. I thought they were saying, 'kite' and that sounded like a pretty cool nickname to me until I told my mom about it.
Where is the picture of Sharapova? arrrrgh!
Yeah, my grandmother always said "darky."
"Sentencing on the assault charge is scheduled for April, and Martinez faces from five to 16 years in prison."
NO racial slurs geared to any group, should be tolerated. Our country needs to pull together, not apart. If we are citizens of the U.S. we are obligated to stand together. Otherwise, GET OUT...
Don't worry. It's much Ragu about nothing.
I was born an American. Does that make me a native?
During the exodus from Italy Between 1892 and 1924, the Italian Government failed to send any identifying papers to the United States government indicating birth records, marriage records, etc., of these Italian boat people. (Among them were my loving grandparents.)
The USA detained this large group of Italians on Ellis Island until the paperwork arrived and the Italian citizens could be processed and admitted to this country, legally.
The Italian gov't never capitulated.
As the Ellis Island population grew, the US Government decided to allow the Italians entry into the country 'With Out Papers'.
Thus the term W.O.P.
Thus the reason it is exclusive to Italians.
Capice? Good.
