Goodbye, Dubai (Protectionists Rejoice)
Los Angeles Times ^ | March 10, 2006 | The Editors

Posted on 03/10/2006 10:28:49 AM PST by RWR8189

PROTECTIONISTS, REJOICE! The dastardly United Arab Emirates company that would have presumed to unload containers of underwear and toothpaste on U.S. soil has backed down, and it will now divest its U.S. port interests to an American entity. Rest assured, the nation is now safe from dangerous Middle Eastern accountants and port logistics specialists.

Dubai Ports World did what was necessary, if not necessarily fair, on Thursday by agreeing to give up the U.S. operations of its newly acquired British ports company. The House Appropriations Committee had voted 62 to 2 on Wednesday to block the deal; a similar bill was pending in the Senate.

Although President Bush rightly stood by the acquisition and vowed to veto any bill that stood in its way, he was fighting a losing battle that only deepened a growing rift in the Republican Party. Dubai Ports World officials wisely recognized that they had to put some distance between themselves and their new U.S. assets. The company probably will sell its U.S. assets or create a U.S. company with a separate board to run them.

Much as we wish it would go away, the fight may not be over yet.

For one, the terms of the divestiture remain unclear, and some members of Congress are demanding more details. Will it be enough for Dubai Ports World to create a U.S. subsidiary? Will it have to open headquarters in the United States? Pay its employees in dollars?

safe from dangerous middle eastern...accountants and...logistic...

What about enginners? You forgot to mention engineers in that list of dangerous middle easterners.

Mohamed Amanullah Atta, a tall, slim, 33-year-old electrical engineer [who, of course, was one of the 9/11 hijackers]. I'm not sure who is more dangerous to our nation - the actual terrorists, or those Americans who labor under the misconception that Islam is a religion of peace, that Muslims can be befriended and made allies, and that education, peace, prosperity, and democracy are the cure.

They've just watched Bush be all but reduced to smoking rubble over this, thanks in no small part to their own efforts to distort and misinform. They can afford to toss him a few crumbs while they dance on his grave.

I just call 'em bigots. Puts them on the same level as UAE, then I guess. Bigots not doing business with bigots. Makes perfect sense.

Well, for the sake of discussion, and as a rhetorical device, substitute the ports in question by more obvious national security enterprises of major importance - say, Lockheed Martin, Newport News shipyard, or Pantex plant [nuclear warheads]. Obviously, a proposition to cede control of such strategic assets would be a no-no.
This being the case, the principle of "protected enterprises" is unassailably true, and the only question remaining is where to draw the line.

If its that bad and your progressive conscience cannot take it, then end it all and deny us "protectionist bigots" your messianic qualities. We'll miss you. Or you could grow up and stop acting like the Freudian Fruitcake Liberals who think that anyone opposes them has mental instabilities and learn to debate democratically.

The ones that are with us pay lip service to their "constituents". They don't want to get killed for saying they don't want to kill Jews.

You are going to have to trust a Muslim at some point in your life. You can not kill them all. There are 1.5 Billion of them.

During the reign of the NAZIs..the Germans who did not want to kill Jews said nothing for similar reasons..they didn't want to die.

Moderate Muslims have to be out there....they are people..they are HUMAN!! The UAE was a shinning example and we kicked them in the b@lls.

So much for winning hearts and minds. This just put us back two years in the WOT..thanks Schummie..thanks a lot for risking future generations to further war.

Bush isn't running again, so the MSM can afford to be magnanimous to him once in a while. But they are coupling their magnanimity toward Bush with disdain for the rest of the Republicans - who ARE running again. Not to worry, their agenda is firmly intact.

I cannot deny the truth in that.

I think it is preposterous to think that we will ever shrug the "puppet of Israel" label in the middle east when everybody we attempt to do business with has to pas an Isreal litmus. We are just confirming their claims.

CHECK THIS OUT: According to the UAE website, the UAE does not allow foreigners to own any business outside the freetrade zone unless that business is 51-PERCENT OWNED BY A UAE citizen.

So much for UAE being an open for business country: (CHECK BELOW)

"In this type of ownership, 51% of the company will be owned by a UAE national and the other 49% you may own, with the business being situated anywhere in the UAE.
There are seven categories of business organisation that can be established, which are - general partnership company, partnership-en-commendam, joint venture company, public shareholding company, private shareholding company, limited liability company and share partnership company. General partnership companies are limited only to UAE nationals, while the establishment of partnership-en-commendam and share partnership companies are not presently encouraged."

The only protectionists are the UAE government, which according to its own website, does not allow foreigners to own a business in their country (outside the very small free trade zone) unless IT IS 51-PERCENT OWNED BY AN UAE NATIONAL.

Google the UAE govt and do your own research if you don't believe me.

The UAE's official website requires one to register, and I dont feel like it.

I saw a representative today on CNBC confirm the 51-percent ownership, and that peaked my interest, so I checked it out and found that it is the UAE which is the TRUE PROTECTIONIST.

These people don't believe there is such a thing as an innocent Muslim. Nineteen Muslims on board four airplanes are enough evidence to convict 1.2 BILLION Muslims of Guilt by Association, apparently. That's what passes for Justice in the American Court of Public Opinion these days.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Muhammed Ali are just as guilty of mass murder as Muhammed Atta by this logic.

Bigotry is a poor substitute for thinking.

Well, so far, the evidence suggests that the UAE company DPW is innocent of being a danger to you . . . yet you chose not to trust them.

Do you really feel that it's either be a bigot or die?

Because they are dogs, or behave that way(for they lilly livered pissants amoung us).

It's them or us, baby, face it, only one leader of the pack.

Oh, of course, we don't think or feel that way, but as long as there's more of them, that's how the game will go.

"Goodbye Dubai, Protectionists Rejoice"

I'd like my daughter to not ever have to explain to her child, as I had to explain to her a few years ago, why we couldn't go up in the Sears tower. I would like to be safe from a cult of dangerous, death-worshipping savages.

Apologists for weakness in this country called Reagan an "amiable dunce" and now call George W. Bush a "chimp"--and those of us who voted for him, but remain baffled by his notions of 'national security' at home, are being smeared . . . by fellow conservatives as . . . "idiots". (See tag-line)

I think those who agree with me have been very patient with you. You'd better stop and re-build all your ruins, peace and love can win the day . . despite all your losing.

That's what he replied, in fact.

It makes me worry -- one of the common 'knocks' against the R party has always been the claim that there is a heavy dose of bigotry in the R's.

Not being one myself, I've always denied that. But this entire thing has made me reconsider who and what the R party is . . .
