T exas policymakers are once again dealing with the most difficult of all policy areas: taxes. Taxes are necessary because government has to be financed, but no one wants to pay taxes. To the extent possible, all are happy to let someone else bear the financial burden of government. Anyone who has managed to avoid that burden understandably seeks to protect the privilege.
Tax avoidance demonstrates that taxes are an economic negative even where there is a benefit from the financing of government. Some level of government is necessary and beneficial. The proper level of government is not considered here but if there is to be a net benefit from taxation, it makes sense that policymakers should maximize it. This means the tax system should have as little negative effect on the economy as possible.

So, do you want to hear about my plan to tax illegal immigrants?
Either they'll stop coming, or they'll have to pay for everything....
fair tax bump
The desired article is a few articles down on the linked page, left-hand half of page. It offers some interesting insights.
I'd prefer the first option, but the second is a step in the right direction, and would go a long way toward making the first happen!
Sure, fire away! Interesting PKB BTW.
[[Taxes are necessary because government has to be financed, but no one wants to pay taxes.]]
Yes they do. Liberals LOVE paying taxes. Just ask them. Bill Clinton even said that he wished that Bush had NOT given him a tax break because he was rich and didn't need it.
Talk's cheep!!! Say'n & do'n are 2 different things ... and we all know that Little Willie is a gross liar and cheat.
The poli-ticians will never stop unless we stop them...

I know it's just a cut and paste, but the Liquor Tax existed, it's what the Whiskey Rebellion was about. Around a hundred years ago local property tax existed on all kinds of property, real or intangible, and there was debate about methods of assessing from the beginning. Plus an income/business tax sort of existed in the form of faculty taxes on those in certain trades.
Ah, but fewer taxes are necessary if there is less government to be financed.
But these days, people seem to want more government, and less personal responsibility. And they're willing to force their neighbors to pay for it, via majority vote.

All Taxes Are Not Created Equal Advantages of Consumption Tax Versus Business Tax
"Taxes are necessary because government has to be financed, but no one wants to pay taxes. "
Hmmmm, seems that is one problem that has been around the mill a few times.
We have shed our blood in the glorious cause in which we are engaged; we are ready to shed the last drop in its defense. Nothing is above our courage, except only (with shame I speak it) the courage to TAX ourselves.

A Taxreform bump for you all.
If anyone would like to be added to this ping list let me know.
John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.
H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.Refer for additional information:
Yup - thass pretty nearly the one.
The income tax, being a Communists recommendation for free countries, is designed to have the maximum negative economic effect. The more entrenched the left becomes the more economically negative the tax system becomes. The purpose is to destroy free enterprise.
As the SQLers start to squeal I say, if the shoe fits, wear it.
Texas is messing with itself, apparently. They are, apparently, proposing to increase business taxes, and our hero (the author) is taking them to task for that thought.
Well, he is right! One would hope that sanity prevails, and increased business taxes are not passed into law in Texas.
The money spent in Iraq is to make sure your kids are alive to get an education - and not one from the Wahabbis.
Look up: Priorities.
