DeLay Will Face Voters' Verdict This Week (Democrats cheer for DeLay)
Washington Post ^ | Sunday, March 5, 2006 | Sylvia Moreno and Chris Cillizza

Posted on 03/04/2006 8:14:28 PM PST by SolidSupplySide

SUGAR LAND, Tex. -- Larry and Judy Deats live in the heart of Tom DeLay's congressional district and would appear to be part of the Republican faithful that have kept the former House majority leader in office for 22 years.

Mention Ronnie Earle, and Larry accuses the Travis County district attorney, a Democrat who convened the grand jury that indicted DeLay on money-laundering and conspiracy charges, of running a witch hunt. Bring up former vice president Al Gore, who attacked the Bush administration during a recent speech in Saudi Arabia, and Judy says he should be charged with treason.

But for the first time -- with DeLay under criminal indictment, rebuked three times by the House ethics committee and linked to former GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to political corruption charges -- the couple is not sure whether their congressman will again get their votes.

From the article:

Democrats are hoping DeLay is the GOP nominee because they believe he is politically damaged enough for them to defeat in November. Without DeLay, Democrats would be hard-pressed to win in a district that gave President Bush 64 percent of the vote in 2004.

Don't vote the way the Democrats want you to. Vote for Campbell! Keep CD22 Republican!

If I lived down there, I would vote for Campbell in heartbeat and don't let anyone tell you that you are not doing a good job in promoting Campbell.

Time for the GOP to clean up the party from some of the ethical lapses by our elected officials.

Democrats who would hope DeLay wins a republican primary are a perfect example of what's wrong with politics today. If they were at all interested in being consistant they would root against DeLay because they believe he's a criminal.

Tom Delay is one of the few politicians in our country who has true grit. I will not count him out until there are 2 recounts in the primary.

His talents are desperately needed in the house to help keep the RINOS in line.

I would love to see him President someday. He has hauled the dirty load for the Republican party, and paid his dues. He is no saint, but he completes political tasks set for him by the party and delivers.

He has been subject to a lot of underhanded legal maneuvering by former Clinton appointees and aficionados, targeted by the DNC, and wealthy Democrat aristocrats.

I hope Delay wins hands down and goes on to bury Nick Lampson so deep that he can't even ask for a recount.

If anyone has earned poetic justice Delay has. He does not deserve to be the Republican party's scapegoat.

Those who buy the Campbell softer-gentler line have started to believe the trash that Dims have created for their viewing pleasure.

As to Delay being connected to Abramoff? Get in line, so are half the Republican and Democratic congressmen and Senators.

The Dims want to desperately get rid of Delay because they can't handle him either on the floor of the house or in the rough and tumble of backroom politics.

I wish we had another dozen like him.

The funny thing is, is that even if Campbell wins, he'll have ZERO influence in the House. He'll be the proverbial freshman trying to make the varsity squad. Plus you can bet that the MSM/DNC will give him the obligatory support ("Disgraced DeLay succeeded by moderate, centrist Republican, willing to work with Dems") but will stab him in the back eventually.

Campbell needs to take the GOP nomination and if Delay wins his court battle he can try to retake his seat in 2008. I agree, at this time, the GOP needs to clean up and move on and snub their noses at the Democrats.

Most of all, the Democrats must be a bit concerned about Campbell. Undoubtedly, they have internal polling data showing Campbell would beat a Democrat opponent.

Democrats are hoping DeLay is the GOP nominee because they believe he is politically damaged enough for them to defeat in November.

This is classic spin by the MSM/DNC. Any FReeper other than the poster should easily recognize this. Deep down, the MSM/DNC is scared of DeLay winning the primary and having a sacrificial lamb Dem face him in the general. If your opponent is "politically damaged", the cardinal rule in politics is that you simply don't mention it because you're confident that you're going to win anyway. The fact that the MSM/DNC stated this shows that they're quietly defecating in their pants at DeLay winning.

Meanwhile, I'm glad you don't live down there and would be voting for Delay if I did live there.

When you can prove Delay is corrupt, I'll listen. You can't. But, hey, trying and convicting someone then running them out of power IS the spineless jellyfish Republican/Conservative way. Perception matters more than Truth evidently. And someone that romances you with pleasing rhetoric to woo a vote evidently is more important than an influential leader with a spine that gets the job done with a GOOD legislative track record already on display.

>>>"Those who buy the Campbell softer-gentler line have started to believe the trash that Dims have created for their viewing pleasure."

Previously, DeLay was a businessman. As I recall, Campbell is a lawyer and has served several governmental appointments. Campbell claims to be a conservative, but DeLay has proven to support conservative causes. I don't think there are any claims that DeLay individually benefited from campaign contributions.

That DeLay makes the Democrats furious should be THE REASON to keep him, not to toss him out. The country needs more conservatives with testicular fortitude.

Agreed. If anyone can a force to help unify the party for 2008, it will be Tom Delay.

Like you, I hope he prevails.

Without him and his ilk,the party will be flailing around like a group of bleating sheep.Of course the dems know this and have arrayed themselves accordingly.

Delay has put the Dems in the backseat repeatedly on every issue he has had with them. That is why they can't stand the thought of facing him across the aisle or in the back room.

I believe the Dems would even try to assasinate Delay if they didn't think they could put him to rest in this election cycle.

I hope he has some heavy protection around him these next few months.

"A Washington insider and Republican Party loyalist, Tom Campbell comes armed with a sparkling résumé and a BlackBerry brimming with high-level political contacts. He's a former Bush I appointee; his inner circle includes a former Republican National Committee chairman handpicked by Ronald Reagan; he already has the covert support of some big-money-raising D.C. lobbyists; and he's been quietly courting endorsements from Republican congressmen and senators who are fed up with DeLay's fiercely partisan, slash-and-burn approach to politics."

http://houstonpress.com/Issues/2005-12-29/news_full.html

Yep, Campbell's your typical GOP flunky who himself has questionable ties to shady lobbyists. I'm sure the MSM/DNC will bring this up in the primary < /Sarcasm >

$500k since 2001, (you conveniently left that out) On average about 50k a year each, fully disclosed to the election commission, and a common practise among the majority of pubbies who want to travel the election circuits with their families.

I can't blame any Republican politician for wanting to keep his family together on the road, and have them do work for them.

Its better than what the Dims do: leave their wives and family home and get BJ's from interns and staffers, and be scandalized afterwards. I like Tom's style.

Tom boy can pay Christ on a Crucifix for all I care, as long as he is successfully re-elected.

And as I understand, most of the money went to his daughter (his wife's salary as I recall was a pittance considering she was a full-time campaign worker and high-level advisor, natch). His daughter ran a campaign consulting firm (presumably with employees and other clients) and the rest of the money went to her company.

I don't know the details and it's been a while, but since I didn't bring it up, I don't feel obligated to find those details.

The key is, if DeLay loses, the politics of smear and insinuation win.

If Ronnie Earle's contemptable indictment hadn't gone through, then people might make make this claim, but DeLay has always obeyed the law and that kills the Dems.

DeLay was "close to Abramoff". Well, they published the list of 5 people who were under scrutiny for the Abramoff shenanigans: Reid, Dorgan, Hayworth, Ney and Burns(?). In any case, DeLay was not among them and they just happened to be the top 5 receipients of Abramoff money. It turns out that for all of those "links", DeLay didn't get much off of his connection to Abramoff. It's all smears.

If Campbell wins, so does Ronnie Earle.
