It is indeed, and is basically a subjective opinion of the assessor.

Pity another guy in town-- he has no view to speak of, but if his neighbor cuts his trees down, then he's probably off to the bank for a loan.

The view tax ... I'd build a billboard inbetween my house and a lake/mountain if I had to pay that much!

Everyday I keep looking at the real estate websites for North/South Carolina ... and they get better looking every day.

The kids have to leave, to find decent jobs.

Not just the kids either. The whole state has a 100% anti-corporate attitude.

I work for IBM. The company is about the only thing keeping this part of the state from sliding back into a 19th century economy.

Several years ago IBM was considering building their new 300mm fab here. They were told it would probably take 10 years to get the permits and in the meantime one of our elected officials was writing insulting letters to the company president. Needless to say the plant was built elesewhere.

BTW, me and Mrs SV plan to get out in the summer of 2007.

You can buy a Victorian for $100,000 but only if you can afford to live 60+ miles from where there is any employment.

Houses in Chittenden county, which is where the work is, are way more expensive than in much of the rest of the country. An 800sq ft ranch can be $250,000.

At least New Hampshire has lower taxes (for now). In fact MA and RI lost population last year and MA is the only state to have lost population in the census.

A Green Flag for the Green Mountain State?
I think that there are more Muslims in the NYC metropolitan area than there are people in Vermont.
