BIGMOUTH WHINE (Smiths' Morrisey investigated by FBI, MI5 for "terrorist" comments against Bush)
NY Post ^ | February 24, 2006 | Dick Johnson

CROONER Morrissey was quizzed by the FBI and British intelligence after he called President Bush a "terrorist." The former frontman for gloom-pop heroes the Smiths says he was baffled to be hauled in for questioning. "The FBI and the Special Branch have investigated me and I've been interviewed and taped and so forth,"

-snip-

"They were trying to determine if I was a threat to the government, and similarly in England. But it didn't take them very long to realize that I'm not. I don't belong to any political groups . . . My view is that neither England nor America are democratic societies. You can't really speak your mind, and if you do you're investigated."

Even knowing he is a leftie, I still like his music.. But I don't listen to his music for politics, just like I would never buy that Ashcroft gospel album.

Give me a break! Why bother investigating, does anyone really think he is a threat to anyone? In the 80's he had an album title that was threatening to the Queen, but do you think they wasted any time on security? All the paxil in the world couldn't get him to commit a terrorsit act.

Some of the best music out there is 80s punk, much of which as anti-Reagan as Greenday is anti-Bush... I laugh at the ignorance of the message while enjoying the music.

And MY view is that if these WEREN'T democratic societies - he would either be in a jail cell or put up against a wall and shot at sunrise.

the music reminds me of my angst ridden youth, but his politics are amuse me more than anything.
I suspect he dosen't actually believe half of what he says, but knows he'll get a few columns in the press. It's worked since 1983, so why change now....hehe

This is where the left is really funny.. No one stopped him from speaking his mind, nor speaking it in the future.. all they did was verify that threatening statements didn't constitute a real threat.. Anyone can speak their mind, but they have to realize there may be consequences to their words.. the old 'fire in the movie theater' analogy fits..

Mueller: Hey, I know you and you can not sing!

Morrissey: That's nothing, you should hear me play the piano.

Morrissey makes great music, I don't care what anyone says. (There is a light that never goes out)

Wow, if they only took people in the House and Senate who have talked smack about our President, they would be interviewing for months.

Maybe Morrissey tried to get an inter-library loan of Chairman Mao's little red book (end sarcasm)...

Maybe he really is tied, by a degree of separation that is in the "grey area" - to terrorists.

I agree. Many punk/alternative lyrics are somewhat insightful. Bands like the Pistols and Clash had something to say. I might not always agree with their point of view but at least they weren't singing "yeh yeh yeh babeeeeee I love you".

Even a pop/punk crossover hit like "Rock the Casbah" has a deeper message. While the song is considered one of the Clash's lesser efforts, the lyrics about the refusal to accept modernity in certain elements of the Muslim world ("by the order of the prophet, we ban that boogie sound") were brilliant and quite applicable to the present day.
