You know how things kind of change after you're in charge? I REALLY trust the union workers to stand up for the US security.

So it's not just the UAE we have to worry about, or the illegals, but Union Workers are now all Manchurian Candidates, ready to truck in weapons to destroy us because, well, they just don't care, them union guys, they're all unamerican thugs who don't give a crap if 9-11 happens again in their cities?

Please.

I think the danger is more (as someone noted earlier) that UAE is "friendly" now, but could fall into dangerous hands at some point in the future.
---
Britain is friendly now, but could fall into dangerous hands.
Canada is friendly now, but could fall into dangerous hands.
Do you see where I'm going with this?

That's because the Middle East is both more complex and more subtle than many Americans know, or want to believe.

Good post...and...I hope we don't become 'too' nuanced in understanding the Middle East...I much prefer the iron fist approach...

OK who is our enemy. Do you think the rulers of places like the UAE and a good percentage of the populance that parties like wild in Europe and in the Worlds Club Meds want to see us destroyed. I am not buying it. I am under no illusion that the 5 million people of the UAE have huge ambitions to control us all. They are being smart by not putting all their eggs on oil. Thats a good thing.

Sound like their attitudes toward women are on the right track and that's a big step in the right direction for this region.

Sounds like the 'moderate' version of Islam that the West could concieveably coexist with, and something worth promoting vs the jihadist bunch.

Well, Russia and China have "Christian" churches too, but that doesn't mean they should handle port operations in the U.S.

There's no getting around the fact that two 9/11 terrorists came from the UAE. And please don't post your picture of the shoe bomber from the UK. He certainly doesn't look British to me.

This is just not a wise move. It's clear where UAE's sympathies lie--they follow Muslim law.

Perhaps somebody should ping Mark Levin on this one. He might find it interesting.

Wait, what are we getting out of the deal?

A place (on land) to park the THEL?

Sure, I definitely agree--nuancing is best when done on rare occassions. I agree about the iron fist...but I'd rather W be moving the pieces into place for later (Iran) now instead of having to wait for the UN or unreliable allies like Turkey, who screwed us in the last minute in Iraq. (I suspect they regret that now where the US considers the kurds wards of the state, so to speak, instead of our owing Turkey.)If we are prepared for the next step, and that next step topples Iran as the next big player on the world stage, it could have huge benefits for the region.

And W's energy policy is another of those pieces--something else greeted with disdain here when he announced it, and for which he got that nice announcement form the Saudis about upping refining capacity.

It's not the just the MSM and Democrats who misunderestimate W, apparently. I'm not all in on this or saying any of this is the real deal, but as the hours pass, the hysterics who were screaming "Treason!" earlier today seem to have gone into a more thoughtful mode.

We cant base a whole forign policy on the fact that 2 of the 911 bombers were from the UAE. I am not sure what the percentage is but 2 people out of a population of 5 million doesnt mean much to me. I am not saying there the only bad guys there but there not the majority at all. I mean 2 guys from the UAE were 911 hijackers versus UAE giving us land for bases and other operations. What proves more?

Wait, what are we getting out of the deal?

I seat at the strategic middle east table in a never ending game of musical chairs...

Plus...if we attack Iran...and UAE is an ally...and Iran attacks UAE...

WE CAN PULL THE DAMN GLOVES OFF and we have successfully bifurcated any attempt by Iran to cast this as a Western vs Arab conflict...

Duh...

Check out Michelle Malkin's most recent column. She has tracked the funding for this purchase.
Of course nothing's as it first seems, but not to be able to decipher the dangerous position that the US has voluntarily put itself into is just inexcusable.
And that is Mexico, that is a ally and a border! (this doesn't actually deal with WHO is streaming across the border...), but to import an Arab owned company to have anything to do with our security is TOTAL IRRESPONSIBILITY.
If anything shows that Pres. Bush is living in a different reality than the American people it is this decision.

Actually I believe reid's mother was British and his father Jamacain, but I guess that he was born and raised in Britain doesn't pass your SS like purity test.

Get back to me when Michelle Malking criticizes the part saudi owned Fox news network, where she makes a chuckie schumer bee line to get in front of their cameras.
