Thank you, I've long thought our justice system should be reformed. I don't know if I could find or write an article on it to start a thread on though. :p

White-collar crime shouldn't require you to die in prison.

It's not required. Might happen, though. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

Try locating an article on the subject on the web via google search, and post it. Be careful thats its not obviously too left of center. Don't want admin to kill it.

"I heartily agree. A guy makes off with millions and defrauds the public trust-- steals from us all with no way to fight back. Why exactly does this guy get to have a cushy sentence?"

Thanks, like I said I should have been more careful in my wording, but my primary point is white collar crime is insidious and often damages on a level much vaster than a violent crime. I don't even carry a gun which shows how much I worry about violence, I do, more often than not use my modest locks on house and car. Many times today I will take precautions and time consuming actions to protect me from white collar criminals (on my computer alone) and I still won't know what the big time crooks in business, or government are doing that will effect me and even my country for years to come.

He violated the public trust, plain and simple. He essentially sold his country to the highest bidder for his own personal gain. As a former military offcer, raised on the ideals of service and sacrifice to the Nation, he knew better than that.

As another former military officer, allow me to say that what he did ranks, IMHO, just below treason. Yes, I take it *that* seriously. This isn't some corporate executive taking a bribe - this is an elected representative, a former military officer, selling his country out for a few dollars.

I'm frankly surprised that Duke Cunningham hasn't taken the only honorable option he has left.

Very true. I'm all for Cunningham "doing manual labor for room and board." He deserves all the disgrace that has been heaped on him.

However, he doesn't deserve the death penalty.

No, I wouldn't include treason.

I'd have to know more about this classified info issue re: Cunningham. Certainly he didn't have the intention of hurting the U.S.

I don't think there's much disagreement between us.

That would be more or less my view. I don't mean that people should avoid all prison time just because they're old or ill.

"...the former 50th District congressman, who pleaded guilty to bribery and tax evasion in November, now lives on a ranch performing manual labor in exchange for room and board."

Sorry, but I highly doubt that.

He sold out the public interest. That's not the same as national security. Unless there is clear evidence to the contrary, the reasonable presumption in this case would be that he made America less secure only by a stretch of the imagination.

White-collar crime shouldn't require you to die in prison.

It's not a pleasant thing. And I hope Cunningham serves his time and
gets adequate treatment. Heck, the California system give heart transplants
and IIRC sex-changes to inmates.

Serving his time, even with the rough prospect of death will put
any honorable service person returning from our War On Terror to
not go down the same dark path.

"Randy "Duke" Cunningham has recurring prostate cancer and will likely die in prison if sentenced to the 10 years behind bars prosecutors are seeking, his defense lawyers said in court papers filed late Friday."

He should have thought have that before taking over $2 million in bribes and cheapening his office. A scumbag and I have no sympathy for him.

I agree with you that the penalty for white collar crime should be upped and enforcement needs to be improved. A big reason for the recent wave of corporate fraud in this country is that dirty executives have no reasonable expectation of being punished. To me defrauding investors out of millions of dollars, and destroying your employee's livelihood and pension is a lot worse than what a street thug who steals wallets does. And the thug would probably get more time in jail.

She is arguing that she should get her share of the profits they made in the house they bought in the 80's. Not unreasonable. A separate issue is whether she knew about the bribery and should be prosecuted for it. If so, she should give up her claim to the money. If they don't prosecute her, she should get her $300,000 or so.

Personally, I think she knew what was going on, but I don't know if prosecutors have enough to prosecute.

You do the crime, you do the time. Congressmen/Hotshot pilots get the same as the rest of us.

Come on... many wives have absolutely no idea what their husbands do for a living or where the money comes from. The idea she's culpabable with no evidence is a bit over the top.
