I've been there twice and tought it was one of the mpst beautiful cities I have ever seen. The area around the red light district, and the district itself, are very nice.
It was quite an eye opener to walk by the windows and see the prostitutes displaying their wares.

I've been to Amsterdam twice. The first time, I was a young single girl. A few of us girls who were travelling alone and staying at the youth hostel got together and went down to the red light district to check it out. As we were standing on the street, a guy asked us how much for the three of us!
The 2nd time, I took my 13 yr old son and we stayed away from that area. Of course, there's porn all around Amsterdam. You can go someplace that looks family-friendly to buy a postcard and find porn mags.
I have a friend who went there...got mugged at knife point.
