Oh, Good Grief, Yourself Yourself (Mark Steyn on Cheney incident)
National Review Online ^ | 2/14/06 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 02/14/2006 5:53:37 AM PST by frankjr

I'm reluctant to disparage John Podhoretz as some effete metrosexual Ethel Merman impersonator, being one myself. But I can't see how the hunting thing is going to hurt Cheney or the GOP. For one thing, even when they've got the bones of a case, you can always rely on the Democrats and the media to over-react and, in so doing, come across as a lot of prigs. Already, NBC's David Gregory, the George Clooney of the press corps, has been huffin' an' a-puffin' all over the TV demanding answers - multiple answers - about why he had to wait 18 hours to hear about the accident. Who cares? A "sinister cover-up" has to boil down to more than not giving David Gregory a press release. And, given that the media's spent the last two weeks telling the public why they don't need to see these Danish cartoons, it's hard to take them seriously as sudden converts to the public's right to know every detail, if only when it comes to minor hunting accidents.

From an anecdotal survey of my part of the North Country, most guys see the Cheney business as an excuse to tell their own hunting stories, mostly of the been-there-done-(or-nearly-done)-that variety. I'm not saying I'm entirely on board with the line that real men shoot each other all the time without whining like a bunch of ninnies about what's no more than a healthy American male bonding experience. But on balance this is one of those no-scandal scandals where Democrat/media hysteria only underlines their estrangement from the average red-state male. If John disagrees, I'd be happy to argue it out with him on a hunting trip deep in the woods - or, if he doesn't trust me that far off the grid, we can shoot each other's Broadway cast albums off the back of the pick-up one weekend.

One other thing David. If you want the latest about the VP get off your dead a$$ in DC and follow him around. What are you going to do the rest of your life, hang around the press room and wait for someone to bring you a story on a silver platter? Nevermind, I already know the answer.

Talk about out of touch.I was floored when a journalist asked about impeachment during a WH press conference.I couldn't determine if she were serious or facetious.

It seems like playing a weak hand, to me, the MSM going wall-to-wall with stories about how the they are no longer in the loop. But I guess that's why I'm not a highly paid editor or producer.

The Liberals and especially the Liberal media just don't get it. They probably have never been hunting or laid a hand on a gun. The good ole boys down here in Georgia are already chuckling about "Quailgate." The way this story has been blown out of proportion exemplifies the huge cultural gap between Liberals that probably wouldn't survive even more than a few days on the TV show "Survivor," and the average Joe that goes fishing or hunting on the weekend.

By the way, does anyone know the name of the woman reporter at the White House who asked Scott McClellan "Would this be a bigger story if he had been killed?"

Can there ever have been a more ignorant question from a reporter?

They as the Democrat Party are becoming such a joke. Former Vice President Gore goes to Saudia Arabia and due to his comments will probably cost some innocent lives and yet we hear not a peep from the irrelevant media......Meanwhile, the media does more in moving people to the right then we ever ask for....

If 18 hours drives Gregory nuts, Ted Kennedy's delay in telling the facts of how he drowned Mary Jo, must be really driving him off the wall. NOT!

Well, I suppose one answer about why folks had to wait to hear about the hunting episode, is that Ted 'the swimmer' Kennedy set the bar on that one - pretty low, if I remember correctly.

WAITING to report a crime (until the victim is certain to be deceased) is primarily a Dem response, so what are the lib reporters complaining about when a Republican does the same?

At least this accident was reported to the authorities in good time, just not to the lib press (who think they ARE the authorities, I guess). If Kennedy had reported his crime immediately, he wouldn't be a murderer today.

What John Podhoretz said that prompted the great repsonse:

WHAT CHENEY MUST DO [John Podhoretz]

This story is a very big deal, despite all the mitigating factors -- the accident involved a friend, his medical team was right there to help, and all that. Something like this has never happened before, and it is a genuinely disturbing thing to think that the vice president of the United States actually shot somebody last weekend, even for fans of his. It's disturbing as well that there was a news blackout that lasted nearly a day about this serious incident. It seems beyond question that the vice president is going to have to go before the cameras, explain what happened, and show genuine remorse for his actions, however inadvertent. It's a difficult challenge for someone as reticent as Dick Cheney. But unless he does so, and makes a good showing of it, he will be damaged goods for the remainder of the Bush presidency.

Yesterday on Fox, Cavuto asked a Demoshill to explain why Kennedy took so long to report the "accident" on the bridge.

The demoshill immediately reared up in anger, "OH NO! We won't bring that up! That's way out of line!

HEE HEE HEE They really do have a double/cross standard don't they. And how many millions of independant voters were watching? (Fox takes the majority of them)

Podhoretz does come across as a girly-man with these comments. You would almost think that Cheney shot the guy on purpose, or as part of an argument over a woman, or in a drunken rage. It was a minor hunting accident of the type that happens all too often. It is of no more importance than a minor traffic accident, UNLESS one lives in a world where guns loom as ominous talismans of a strange primitivism.

What a brilliant man!)

David Gregory is an example of "Rip 'N Write" journalism. (Remember when FAX machines had that continuous feed thermal paper). The WH Press Corps is so used to reporting cocktail circuit rumor, innuendo & pre-digested news releases that they've lost the ability distinguish between real News & what they'd like the News to be.
