These forces may come too late to help much in Iraq; maybe they will be useful in Iran.

Is John "Swiftboat"; Kerry signing up for duty? He could lead the windsurfing battalion.
To: Nextrush
He wouldn't last long if he did.

But in the war on terror, todays Riverines will have not only an offensive capability but will be trained for interdiction, customs and law enforcement, boarding, search and seizure, and more.
The Armys 458 Transportation Company had the mission of interdiction, boarding, search and seizure and more as well as firing up any enemy along the rivers and canals of Viet Nam and neighboring countries.
The US Army has had boats on the rivers since before the formation of the US Navy.

What's the Army's navy been up to on the Tigris and Euphrates lately?

Not much. Around twenty years ago the
Armys Marine field was restructured. The only shallow river capability we have now is a few old LCM 8s. The LCUs are now ocean going self deployable and arent much good for inserting troops on river banks. The LSVs are even larger as are the TSVs. We no longer have gun boats or even picket boats.
