Taking on a test that other Republicans have shunned, retired state Sen. Richard Mountjoy said Tuesday that he was entering the race for the GOP nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
A longtime leader of the state Republican Party's conservative wing, Mountjoy had been weighing a Senate run for weeks but said for the first time Tuesday that his decision was "definite."
I'm in the race," he said in an interview. "No turning back."
The former Monrovia lawmaker described his candidacy as an effort to advance the conservative cause in Congress.
Although Democrat Feinstein has been widely seen as moderate since her 1992 election, Mountjoy said she had "totally taken the positions of the left."
The latest evidence, he said, was her Senate Judiciary Committee vote Tuesday against President Bush's nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the U.S. Supreme Court. All eight committee Democrats voted against Alito, while all 10 Republicans backed him.

Does Susan Kennedy really want the conservatives out her gubernatorial election?
Uh, shouldn't that be "Conservative former state senator?" As is stands, this headline says Mountjoy is a former conservative.
Everyone of them should be challenged and a true national campaign should be ran to unseat them.
Either way, Best of luck to him.
Agree!!
This guy will get creamed. The liberal wackos in california love difi.
What is your opinion?
You're right, and she does.
This guy better have the life record of Jesus, because I seem to remember DiFi runs a seriously evil campaign machine.
----
Yes the Commie [female dogs] of California, are all cut from the same mold. Boxer, Fagstein, Nazi Pelosi, et al, Marxists and socialists without a blink. They also carry the same genes of Tammany Hall that all of the corrupt, criminal liberals that have duped the the dumbest of the dumb in California to vote for them. It will be a nice day to see them all boil in their commie juices.
The moonbats outnumber you so greatly that it would take a miracle to win a statewide election out there for conservatives.
It's sad.
Should be added to the "endangered species" list.
Someday. We will have to win in small increments. Like the Dims used to do. Incrementalism is the ticket here in the People's Republic of California!
The headline linked to reads differently. It appears the poster may have created his own headline.
;)
Mountjoy is a very good conservative!
Too much Botox will do that to ya!
DiFi will probably hit 60% +
The thinking was that the Big City thinking of their state governments did not care about the needs of more rural areas. They had a point, too bad WWII put a stop to the movement.
Well, if that's the plan, I'm sure Alan Keyes is available. He's always available...
Sorry, I didn't notice that.
Sorry, I know he's conservative, but I was trying to make a headline that's more informative.
"A strong conservative that looses to Feinstein could still get enough conservatives out to get the republicans to win the gubenatorial race."
This is one conservative that won't vote for Arnold under any circumstances.
I've never missed voting in an election in 48 years and won't miss the next one but a vote for Arnold is out!
"This guy better have the life record of Jesus"
Dick Mountjoy has as clean a record of anyone that I know of.
His son who is now an Assemblyman is clean also.
There are many fine, dedicated Republicans and Libertarians in Marin, but the Leftists are far more aggressive and far outnumber them.
This may be when I first realized how illiberal, oppressive, and fascistic Leftists are.
(In San Francisco, by the way, the posters were left in place.)
(Needless to say, I have a very low opinion of Leftists--especially those of Marin County. I shudder to think what the world would be like if such Leftists had real power over other people.)
Calling politicians names is at once infra dig and ineffectual.
It is naughty of you to twist the knife that way. Does Keyes speak Spanish?

This picture was probably back when he was a Senator. How many years ago was that? Do you think he has a chance?
Google says yes, actually. Aside from that, think of how a public, heartfelt reconciliation with his estranged daughter would play in the Bay area. It's got legs, I tell ya... ;)
Is the guy a former Conservative, a former state Senator or formrly both?
LA Times has the worst hadlines.
The best things in life come after 80.
Are you kidding me? Dianne Feinstein a moderate? "Widely seen"? LOL. The LA Times...
Difi is a bit light on redistributionist tendencies, and a bit light on embracing pacifistic isolationism, and protectionism.
True, that would indicate a certain interest in electability which Keyes has yet to betray...
Nah. Unless Feinstein is caught in bed with two 14-year old girls, she will win.
Reasonable Republicans cannot win in California. It has to be someone DIFFERENT or with star power, like Arnold or Dennis Miller. This state just can't elect normal people, people with common sense, anymore.
He didn't say she would win.
Very conservative former state senator, sorry that headline was my mistake.
I have never heard of Mountjoy. What does that tell you?
However, it's a waste of time to run a Republican who is NOT conservative. Look at how Arnold has demoralized the base.
If Mountjoy runs, it will be interesting to see how many of California's Republicans are conservatives. We were in the minority when McClintock ran.
Of course, all the talk show hosts campaigned for Arnold.
The California GOP won't support this guy; they're RINOs at best. That's the sad part. The Republican Party in this state has abandoned conservatives.
After reading this thread, I wouldn't blame the GOP. Most of California is red. (see the Bush Country map 2004) If people would concentrate on a get-out-the-vote effort, instead of sitting at home saying a Republican/Conservative can't win, there could be a turn around.
I need to go lay down - my optimist streak just appeared! LOL
LOL.
I always vote for the conservative/repub but they don't often win. However, the valley where I live has an all Repub bunch in control. We DO vote, I suspect they just cheat.
LOL! I suspect you are right. I lived in the Bay Area a few years ago and I knew many many conservatives.
Lots of red real estate in California, not many voters, relatively speaking.
He's sure got my vote. I want that B%*&*$ out!
I just found his site. It's http://www.mountjoyforsenate.com/home.php, he's a korean war vet. He refers to the ballot initiative loss in california as a day of infamy. Don't be suprised if this guy gets 45 percent of the vote. Who knows with low turn out, if he could get everyone who voted for Bush out to vote, he could win.
BTTT
