Thousands may lose special U.S. status

WASHINGTON - The Department of Homeland Security wants to end the special immigration status that has allowed some 300,000 illegal Salvadoran, Honduran and Nicaraguan migrants to remain in this country, many of them in Florida, Bush administration officials say.

But the final decision on the Temporary Protected Status for the three nations, which would force those migrants to return home or remain here illegally and risk deportation, still is under intense debate within the administration, the officials add.

Interesting development where I live in Indiana.

We have had an influx of Latinos from Mexico, and we have hired them at our plant. They are generally very good employees. We have been trying to hire each month what we think we will need and train them. We recently decided that one month we will commit to either hiring all English or all Spanish speaking employees so as not to stretch our training resources by having to run two separate language orientations each month. This month, we have doing our second consecutive English speaking orientation because the temporary agency we use says they will not be able to staff our needs with all Spanish speaking employees. This is highly unusual and she says it's because the pool is down due to 'legal' issues. So, it looks like companies are seeing that they are going to be fined if they hire illegals.

Hot air. They desperately want the illusion that they're actually doing something while millions pour across the border.

It makes sense to end these special immigration exceptions.
However, the USA really should be creative in helping El Salvador, which has been exceptionally cooperative/supportive of the USA on a whole range of issues. This at a time when South American contries are falling like dominoes to socialist Chavez loving governments. Maybe some additional new trade benefits like we give Poland or Australia?

Do you mean helpful to include MS-13 gangs?

Yes in fact I did, I wish the article would have mentioned this as well. The government of El Salvador has been exceptionally helpful to our law enforcement authorities in addressing the gang problem. They simply could not be more agressive in doing so, their laws dealing with MS-13 are incredibly draconian. Just having a tattoo gets you a long prison sentence there.

If they did that it would be a first. There's nothing been more permanent than someone here temporarily.

It’s down due to the New Orleans reconstruction effort. Negan is nuts if he thinks NO is going to remain majority black.

I'm glad to hear this but I have to say

In Indiana?! I would not invade your privacy to ask where you work but a company that only hires Spanish speaking individuals every other month makes me wonder if they are here legally on visas? Do you trust the company you work for to verify this? I hope so.

Negan is nuts if he thinks NO is going to remain majority black.

He didn't say "black".

I believe the term he used was "chocolate". In that case, I am sure he's correct since we are all a form of chocolate, now we have from white chocolate candy bars to special dark. More ambiguous a statement than one would have thought.

So THAT'S why they have come here....they just want tattoos. And here I've been thinking bad things about them. ;)

Is it not possible that their draconian measures are actually chasing them to the US?
