NEW YORK Veteran broadcast journalist Ted Koppel will join The New York Times as a contributing columnist beginning Jan. 29, Editorial Page Editor Gail Collins announced today. Koppel's column will appear on the Op-Ed page periodically.
"This is an exciting, new type of relationship for The Times and I can't think of anyone we'd rather start with than one of the great journalists of our era, Collins said in a statement. "We're very pleased to provide our readers with Ted's fresh, insightful perspective on current events."
In addition to his pieces appearing in the Times' print newspaper, Collins hinted that Koppel would use "his fabled interviewing skills" to produce special features for the new paid area of NYTimes.com, TimesSelect.
"There is no more respected or influential forum in the field of journalism than The New York Times," Koppel said. "I look forward, with great anticipation, to contributing to its Op-Ed page."
Koppel was recently named managing editor at the Discovery Channel, where he will host and produce long-form programming examining major global topics and events.
Koppel spent more than four decades at ABC News, and until recently was the anchor of "Nightline."

Musical chairs. In other news, Dan Rather will be joining the Los Angeles Times, Jayson Blair will be joining the Washington Post, and Judith Miller will be joining the Chicago Tribune.
Some conservatives will "retire" to make room for them.

I can't wait. PBS/NPR cable channel.

I see he's still delusional.

As much as I hate the Times, and as much as I belittle their intelligence, I am *shocked shocked* that they'd hire yet another old, clueless liberal.
Just amazing.

I hope The Times has a "smug, prissy snob" font.

It's because they are so very insecure. Unless they are in front of a camera or have their name on something they can't function. They are so in love with themselves they think everyone else is too. "What...me worry?" :)

Oh, he's not a liberal! What a shock - him joining those two "mainstream" news outlets.
I wonder if he's going to rail against Bush and the war? No way!
