AIDS activist has criminal history

An AIDS activist facing child molestation charges served a year in prison on a 1990 conviction for taking indecent liberties with a child.
His prison records were listed under a different name than the one he uses now.
On Monday, Ricky Odell Yow, 42, of Altamahaw Racetrack Road, Elon, was charged with five counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, three counts each of a first-degree sex offense with a child, using a minor to assist in an obscenity, first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, crimes against nature, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Yow’s partner, Douglas Wayne Murphy, 43, of the same address, is facing the same charges.
Both were held under bonds of $1.5 million.
The alleged victim is a 13-year-old boy, and the charges stem from incidents that happened over several weeks in 2005.
County records show that in 1998, Ricky Odell Duncan changed his name to Ricky Odell Yow.
Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree confirmed that Yow, under the name Ricky Duncan, was convicted of taking indecent liberties with a child in July 1990, in Randolph County. His maximum sentence was for three years, but he served 355 days.
Investigators were unaware of the previous charges and former identity until informed by the Times-News on Thursday.
The Times-News has featured Yow and his work with AIDS activism in several articles using both of his names.
Yow was diagnosed with HIV in 1989. He developed full-blown AIDS in 1995, but has managed the disease with medication.
Yow has been an energetic volunteer with AIDS patients and speaking to groups about his experience living with the disease.
In 2004, Murphy, Yow’s partner, signed documents to incorporate the Global Wheel of Hope nonprofit organization that Yow founded. Its mission is to provide HIV/AIDS education. The organization hosts a monthly HIV/AIDS support group. Yow has spoken with students in Alamance and Caswell schools and at Elon University.
Yow was a Times-News Volunteer of the Week in 1999. He was cited for driving AIDS patients to doctor appointments and working as a counselor for the Alamance CARES organization.
He was nominated for the 2 Those Who Care award by WFMY News 2, but he did not win the award.
Last summer’s Burlington-Alamance International Cultural Festival was dedicated to Yow. Festival organizer Ron Torain was quoted in August saying, "Every year, we dedicate the festival to those unsung heroes. The ones who give their lives to help others. That’s what Ricky Yow does every day."
Yow, who is reportedly in poor health, was moved to Central Prison in Raleigh under a safe-keeping order. Those orders are typically issued for medical or safety reasons.
Sheriff ’s Department spokesman Randy Jones said that if the alleged victim had been exposed to HIV, the district attorney would consider additional charges. He said deputies are "not done" with the investigation.
