Frankly, I cannot imagine why anyone goes to those third-world armpits.
unlike indonesia, where if they were muslims, their trial would be sideshow and judge would claim the woman didn't respect sharia law and it wasn't rape at all because she was an infidel.
They would be released on the spot.
"Normally, she would have been safe.......normally. I would like just 5 minutes in a cage with these 2 cowardly murderers. OK 30 minutes!"
The Thai's won't be very forgiving with these two.
As I said, among scientific professionals, the best you'll do with your argument is break even. Probably, a case of both sides setting out to prove points before gathering evidence. Like the one-sided Meese pornography hearings.
Personal experience from when I was in the age group they are talking about: I could never watch porn with another guy. Soon as someone put a tape in, I said turn it off or I'm leaving.
I would expect a lot of guys are like that. What's the point of getting horny with someone who can't help you? It would be like watching it with your mother.
I suspect, and dearly hope, this is how normal guys think.
Come to think of it, these two guys watched porn together and needed each other's support to approach a woman. Is this the Asian Buttback Mt?
I can watch cheeseburger commercials all day without wanting a cheeseburger. Bad analogy, at least in my case. But an anti-smoking ad has me reaching for the pack?
The Lesson is STAY HOME - what is with this infatuation with sand and water and heat and humidity.
Throw a handful of dirt in your underwear and sit in the tub with the shower on - bingo - same thing
I don't know about Chicago but she would definitely have been safer in the Florida Panhandle.
There is plenty of nice exotic beaches in places like Australia, Guam, and Hawaii where the chances of something like this happening is a 1000 times less.
I feel very sad for this woman and her family.
I kinda like that short summary of Thai "mirandizing" of the suspect.... kewl!
Great quote, Ivan. I'm putting it on my bulletin board.
: )
"I blame her for her naiveity in thinking she's safe in a "tropical paradise". It's in the Third World nontheless. I've been to a number of Third World hell holes myself, and they are not safe."
Have you been to Thialand? It is probably one of the safer tourist destinations in SE Asia. While it is still considered a Third World Country, it is on the brink of emerging from that status. These two stellar members of the human race are the ones to blame here, not the victim. If these clown are convicted they will not spend much if any time leeching off the Thia tax payers, they will be taking "dirt naps" soon after the judges gavel falls!!
Honestly, I am all FOR 'cruel and unusual punishment' in this case, and in these times. And fast-track them, too. And because she was beautiful?? What kind of perversion is that? It is NOT of the Lord.
Will wonders never cease?!?! Neither was named Mohammad!
Too bad they're not in Vermont...they might have wound up before Judge Cashman.
The same thing could happen on a beach near Los Angeles at night. The sad truth is that women need to learn effective self-defense techniques so they have a decent chance of fighting off attackers. But overseas everybody has to pay very close attention to where they go and what is happening around them. While overseas, you should stay in areas where other affluent tourists are hanging around whenever possible.
Katherine came to Thailand to dance on a beach; to ride an elephant; to have a vacation before her finals at university. She was full of confidence and felt immune to the dangers of this world, as we have all felt when we were young adults.
Tragically her faith in her fellow man let her down and she has been taken from us forever. My words cannot express how I feel. Only a parent who has lost a child can know. All I wish is to return Katherine to her home with dignity and privacy, for which I beg the indulgence of the press.
On a personal note I urge those who did this to come forward. The perpetrator is too cowardly to offer themselves to justice in Thailand. But there is a person here that knows. A person that can assist the Police. Someone that can maybe save another life.
I urge that person to come forward to speak out. Katherine was my little girl. Please help her father.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following for their assistance and their sincere condolences in chronological order:
My family and friends and colleagues
South Wales Police - Ian and Mark
Captain Stewart, the crew and passengers of British Airways flight BA9
The staff at the British Embassy in Bangkok, Andy, Peter, Neill, Daniel, Peter
The Thai authorities who have aided my stay in Thailand
The Royal Thai Police for their diligent investigation, Captain Bpongpol and General Issaraphan
The staff at Sega and Norwich Union for efficiently organising everything
Katherine's friends Ruth and Callum with whom she spent her final days
My son Richard for looking after his mum
My Celveen for looking after me
And my son Christopher for travelling to be with me to bring Katherine home
The support from all of you has been wonderful and I am truly thankful for your unquestioning heartfelt support.
95% of Thailand is Buddhist. It's the state religion.
CIA factbook:
Buddhist 94.6%, Muslim 4.6%, Christian 0.7%, other 0.1% (2000 census)
Maybe people are tired of the strip-mall and subdivision hell that most of this country is becoming.
If you keep saying "pornography is harmless," the cognitive dissonance will eventually go away.
A glimpse into the future of ACLU America......?
