Debut of the Chevrolet Camaro Concept
Autoblog ^ | 01/09/06 | Chris Paukert

Posted on 01/09/2006 10:44:48 AM PST by Dan Nunn

DETROIT – Combining dramatic design and exciting performance, the Chevrolet Camaro Concept recaptures the spirit of one of the most popular sport coupes of all time and redefines the Camaro for new generations of fans.

The Camaro Concept embodies the performance and passion that have made first-generation Camaros some of the most sought-after collector cars, updating the formula with a fuel-efficient powertrain, sophisticated chassis and contemporary design execution. The goal is to make the sport coupe relevant to younger enthusiasts while retaining its appeal to its current fans.

“Millions of people of all ages fell in love with the Camaro for all of the right reasons,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, global design (pictured). “Camaros were beautiful to look at and offered performance that could rival expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new car buyers.”

Though only a show car at this point, the Camaro Concept is intended to explore customer reaction to design and engineering elements that might lead to an all-new version of the Camaro.

It was even a better looking car, when Ford called it a mustang.

LOL, what next a redesigned Pontiac "Firebird" ? Just like Hollywood, Michigan can't come up with any new ideas.

Well, Camaro and Firebird are the same body with different frills.

Glad they went all the way back to the '69 grill look.
The 70's front end looked like $hit, IMHO.

It does look a lot like a mustang, which is probably why it looks so nice.

I did a double take when I read in some car mag this weekend that Dodge said the new Challenger, if they greenlight it, won't be going into production till at least 2009?

Thats 3 years from now. I was like, "How in the hell if they already have a completely working concept, will it take 3 years to get it too production?"

Are the US automakers that frickin slow and clueless?

I have to disagree. The front end design is just wrong. From there back, it looks like a Mustang, at least from that pic.

another "retro" concept. looks like someone took a '69 and futurized it, but that makes it the best looking camaro they've put out since then.

If I'm not mistaken, that was a concept design done by some (very) young design student -- and it looks better than what Chevy actually came out with.

That's what I was thinking too. That's why I went looking for the pic, the whole front end is more nostalgically retro.

Probably with a 100hp 4 cyl engine that gets 30mpg.

IMO: The 1968 Z-28 or SS is much better looking! This one looks like a cross between a 1968 & a mustang w/big wheels. I think they should go back to the drawing board.

BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
I ran over my neighbors
BITCHIN CAMARAO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Now it's in all the papers.
My folks bought me a BITCHIN CAMARO with no insurance to match;
So if you happen to run me down, please don't leave a scratch.
I ran over some old lady one night at the county fair;
And I didn't get arrested, because my dad's the mayor.
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Doughnuts on your lawn
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Tony Orlando and Dawn
When I drive past the kids, they all spit and cuss,
Because I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO and they have to ride the bus.
So you'd better get out of my way, when I run through your yard;
Because I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO;
And an Exxon credit card.
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Hey, man where ya headed?
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
I drive on unleaded.

It's the concept.

I'm sure it will look at least 100 times more boring and cheap once put into production considering what american automakers put out these days.

Just like ford did with the new mustang compared to what the concept looked like.
