WASHINGTON
Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay decided Saturday to give up his post as House majority leader, clearing the way for new leadership elections among House Republicans eager to shed the taint of scandal, two officials said.
These officials said DeLay, R-Texas, was preparing a letter informing fellow House Republicans of his decision. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt the formal announcement.
DeLay is battling campaign finance charges in Texas and was forced to step aside temporarily as majority leader last fall after he was charged in his home state. He has consistently maintained his innocence and said he intended to resume his leadership post once cleared.
Mike Pence for Majority Leader!
And the rats bring down yet another good man.
I hope DeLay will keep on hammering on his own....
So why couldn't they just keep their blasted mouth shut?
That's what this whole witch hunt was about. To get rid of DeLay and yet again, the snakes have slithered out their way.
The commies win again. Who needs elections?
WOW!
I would love to see DeLay FIGHT this- only because this is just allowing the Dems dirty tricks to work- I don't want to teach them that they can get away with this crapt!
BUT_ I am very proud of DeLay- he is showing integrity and team leadership- by doing what is right for the House so they can move forward while he takes this fight on-and not leave them in libmo on Leadership--
I admire him more than ever now.....
THese things are always leaked by design.
The media and dims win again.
Why do they let the rats get away with doing this crap to them day in and day out?
If Delay plays things right,he will be back as majority leader in 08.He should learn as lesson from all of this.
Not only that but they are now saying who they want to replace him.
If we just get the Senate to get their crapt together.....the filibuster frenzie has gone too far!
WAY TOO FAR!
Great. So without a fight, the Republicans let another leader get taken down by a bogus scandal. As far as I'm concerned, the entire Republican party should be fired en masse, not be allowed to re-run for their posts, and have new people compete for the vacated seats. This is just pathetic.
LOL, the MSM/DNC win again!
And the Conservative media have let their betters in the MSM run rings around them, as they have for decades.
Which is why Conservative media has ZERO influence on the public.
Sad.
Abramoff hurt way worse than Earle
Because the limp spined Republicans (some of them) are more afraid of the dims and the media than they are of the terrorists. I would like to see who signed the surrender petition.
YEP!!! your right. We eat our own!!! What a shame. This will NOT HELP the Republican party in the long run!! Watch it affect our elections coming up. It is dangerous to discourage the base!!!!
That's right it was the MSM. I will wait for confirmation, not innuenddo.
Is this author believable?
Idiots like you are usually zotted
Good. One less greedy, big-government Republican weasel. Now the party only has to worry about the other several thousand that are driving their Big Stupid Government agenda.
They are if they are hounded by "Legacy" hunting rabid Dem prosecutors.
;-)
Welcome to FR.
I agree. The Abramoff mess is much, much worse than Earle's witch hunt. The fact that Duke Cunningham wore a wire in order to cop a plea could be devastating.
The same "good man" who rammed through "highway" and "farm" pork in the tens of billions, then bleated about how there's no fat left to cut in the budget?
I would love to see the petition as well. I'll bet you a dollar against a donut every rino's name is on it. Just damn. All they do is roll over.
I wonder who the wired Randy Cunningham chatted with?
FOX is doing their "Alert" thing and already interviewed Kate "kill the babies" Michaelman about it.
If I'm wrong, I'll make an apology.
Yes, the Rats are excellent at this and deserve credit for their political acumen, disgusting as their methods are. That is why they are able to project influence that is far beyond the actual support they have. They are very good at singling out and focusing on Republicans who are especially effective -- Gingrich, Limbaugh, DeLay -- and working to destroy their reputations. Republicans, on the other hand, can not even bring down such bloated targets as Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd or Hillary Clinton. Fortunately for us, our numbers are greater than theirs, so our side can make up in quantity what it lacks in political skill.
"And the rats bring down yet another good man."
Anyone remember, just a year ago, the Homeland Security bill behing held up... because Delay didn't want border security to be part of the "Homeland Security" package?
Delay promised that if Sensenbrenner would unattach his bill, then the House would take up the issue in early 2005.
He lied - they never did.
Delay did some good, but don't idolize the man. He's just another politician - better than some, but nothing to idolize.
Hopefully, we can do better.

Legislation Includes Immigration Reforms Recommended by 9/11 Commission Omitted from the Intelligence Reform Billz
(Washington, DCJanuary 27, 2005) In December, House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) reluctantly agreed to shelve important immigration reform provisions of last year's homeland security legislation so that vital intelligence reforms could be enacted as quickly as possible. While key Senate leaders and the White House were prepared to see intelligence reform sacrificed to special interest pressure to block the immigration reforms in the 2004 bill, in the end Sensenbrenner and other House leaders agreed that reforming our nation's intelligence agencies was too important to delay.
Yesterday, Chairman Sensenbrenner and 115 cosponsors introduced legislation to adopt some of the reforms recommended by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission that would correct many of the loopholes in our immigration laws and enforcement policies that were exploited by the terrorists who attacked our country three years ago. H.R. 418 would implement 9/11 Commission recommendations on standards for issuing driver's license and identity document, preventing terrorists from gaining political asylum in the U.S., bar entry of aliens with ties to terrorist groups, and improved security along our borders.
"We congratulate Chairman Sensenbrenner for his leadership in the last Congress and ensuring that intelligence reform was not held hostage to petty politics, and we commend him for his continued commitment to America's security by reintroducing the vital immigration related provisions at the very first opportunity in the 109th Congress," stated Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "Preventing terrorist from entering our country and then blending in to the vast and diverse fabric of our nation is every bit as important as infiltrating terrorist networks overseas. The provisions of H.R. 418 were specifically called for by the 9/11 Commission, and the important work of defending our nation from terrorists will not be complete until all of the 9/11 Commission's recommendations are enacted and implemented."
The House leadership committed to allowing these measures to be considered early in 2005, or to attaching them to other legislation moving through Congress. "There is no need for lengthy hearings and endless referrals to assorted committees," said Stein. "These matters have been studied in depth by the 9/11 Commission and analyzed and discussed by both houses of Congress last year. The only thing that remains to be determined is whether Congress and the White House have the fortitude to stand-up to a few vocal special interests that are prepared to place their own economic and political interests ahead of homeland security.
You are getting pretty crotchety, man.
This whole thing stinks.
Modern equivalant of pitchforks and torches.
A good man falls on his sword.
Right on you are, the liberals win even when they lose elections.
Indiana Congressman Mike Pence
"The same "good man" who rammed through "highway" and "farm" pork in the tens of billions, then bleated about how there's no fat left to cut in the budget?"
Yup.
Just another open borders flunkie out to pork us all.
He is gone and soon forgotten
Tom DeLay will be back...God bless him.
Chances of Delay having dirty hands is increasing every day.
If it's "crotchety" to hold lying professional politicians and a party that does nothing but grow government and cares about nothing but reelection to account, then yeah - I guess I'm getting crotchety.
The statement by DeLay is being read on Fox....the petition by the cowards in the house did it.
