The War on Beer (ZOT!!! Try Our Delicious Troll in Beer Batter)
Seattle P-I ^

Posted on 01/06/2006 10:07:15 AM PST by Its a Culture War

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A state senator wants to force Missouri stores to sell warm beer. Under a bill by Sen. Bill Alter, grocery and convenience stores would risk losing their liquor licenses if they sold beer colder than 60 degrees. The intent is to cut down on drunken driving by making it less tempting to pop open a beer after leaving the store.

"The only reason why beer would need to be cold is so that it can be consumed right away," Alter, who has been a police offer for more than 20 years, said Thursday.

Grocery stores are at fault for the obesity problem. Their sale of already prepared food makes it to easy for people to immediately consume the food, thus getting fat. There is no reason other than ease of immediate consumption that stores sell already prepared food. It must be stopped!

Yea idiot. So you can consume it right away in the privacy of your own home and not have to cool it.

Perhaps convenience stores should therefore keep the condoms on ice.

Are you saying that most Freepers are not in favor of cold beer? I find that hard to believe. I would almost enjoy this as it would mean that Oklahoma is the most alcoholically backwards state in the region.

This is so funny. A grade school kid came up with this hair brained idea. Of course our politicians run with it.

Next, ice, and coolers will be outlawed.

Time to switch to Jack.

Ever have a party and forget to buy beer until the last minute? I can think of many reasons to buy cold beer, none of which include drinking it in the car.

I'm VERY against drinking and driving, more so than most, but this is a ridiculous law.

I think cigarettes should be sold as a filter, paper and tobacco to be assembled later. By selling them 'ready-to-go' we are encouraging people to smoke while driving.

/sarc.

To be followed up by: Rolling cigarettes while driving is more dangerous than talking on a cell phone and thus should be outlawed! (don't even get me started on coffee)

Hell, why don't they just create a 7-day waiting period before being allowed to purchase a beer? You know, have people think about what they are doing. Make sure they really want it.

There is nothing immoral or illegal or dangerous about selling cold beer vs. warm beer.

How about some intelligence in the legislature? If you're trying to prevent drunk driving, then pass (and enforce) laws against it. Don't pass laws about the temperature of the beer or the packaging of the beer or the time of day of the sale of the beer or any other peripheral or ridiculous factor that has nothing to do with the crime you're trying to prevent.

Never fear. Only lagers should be drank ice cold anyway. There is always ales, which even though 60 degrees is slightly warm for ales (they should be served at 45-50 degrees) they would still probably be palletable. Yet this country doesn't need more laws local or otherwise restricting beer consumption. What we need is a purity law like Germany, so breweries stop selling watery crap.

I agree. They want to take away everthing sacred. I mean first it was tobacco, then Jesus Christ, then good food like a cheeseburger and fries and now beer.

We need to revolt or something. Everyone at 8:00 on Friday night (tonight) pop open a beer in retaliation of this stupid proposal. You know it used to be that someone could come up with a stupid proposal and people would just laugh and it would go away. Now they become laws.

Plus, in college I had quite a few warm beers. I would imagine many have in their lives.
