YF-22/23 proposals in '83, contracts in '86. Whats bogus?
Now think about this- Lockheed is already deep into the F-117 program when the 1981 ATF requirments are layed out. General Dynamics plops a delta wing onto their F-16 and MD pumps out the F-15E. Both have more range and speed than the 117. Lockheed knows that they MUST have someting on the table before the request for proposals goes out in '83 because the 117 program will be obsolete. Do you really think they waited 5 years without doing anything?

The F22 is mainly an air superiority fighter. It does have stealth technology but it is not a replacement for the F117.
OK, I'll grant you the YF22/23 proposals were there, but the airplane didn't fly until the early 90's. Sorry to nit pick.

Northrop's Tacit Blue flew in early '82. A definite stealth technology demonstrator program. Do you not see the YF-23 basic layout in that ugly sob?
