Union Board Votes To End Transit Strike

Eyewitness News has learned that the TWU executive board has voted to end the transit strike. Thirty six members voted to end the strike, five voted against ending the strike and two members abstained from the vote.

Here is the latest: the transit union has agreed to take steps to restore service to New York's buses and subways while both sides resume negotiations.

At this point, there is no timetable for the restoration of service. State mediators devised a preliminary framework for a settlement of the MTA contract dispute. Mediators say the two sides have agreed to the deal, pending the approval by the TWU Local 100 executive board this afternoon.

The framework for a settlement currently being discussed in the Grand Hyatt would allow striking workers return to their jobs, possibly as early as today.

Richard Curreri, Mediator: "Both parties have a genuine desire to resolve their differences. They have agreed to resume negotiations while the TWU takes steps to return its membership."

Although buses could roll very quickly, it would be at least 16 to 20 hours before subway service is fully restored.

Most of the 6,300 subway cars have been placed in underground tunnels or in train yards, one next to another. Supervisors have been running empty trains over the rails to keep the rails polished and prevent rust. The 4,600 buses have been stored and guarded at 18 depots.

Employees would have to return to their shifts, tracks and signals would have to be inspected, and subway cars and buses examined before the subways and buses could run.

The tentative deal came without the MTA pulling its pension proposal.

That is key right there. Toussaint has to go with his tail between his legs in defeat, or so it would seem. Unless the weasels pulled it off the table and aren't telling.

How long before some little old lady hits her bus driver over the head with her purse for putting New York through this?

Seems like NYC has found a way to deal with these slackers in the future...threaten to send them to JAIL.
If the city doesn't fine the dog-snot out of them, they'll be right back in the same position in short order.

I spent the first 30 years of my life a Brooklyn native, and back than, almost every year , the subway union would threaten or engage in a strike. Was Mike Quill union boss than, if so he was the most hated man in the city.?

Yes, NYC is falling apart. Hell in a handbasket. Not like it used to be. I remember when it was really New York. Everything's changed.

...and yet, everything is more or less exactly how it always has been.

Depends when the first 30 years of your life was. If they included 1966, then, yes, it was Mike Quill.
