For more background, Exodus was directed by Austrian Jewish refugee Otto Preminger based on the book by the pro Israel novelist Leon Uris and scripted by noted Communist Dalton Trumbo.
"Why is it that Hollywood's (and English theater's) apparent agenda is decidedly anti-Israel?"
Perhaps because the Biblical connection is too much for the atheists in Hollyweird to stomach.
Perhaps they are too enamoured of third world misfits.
Perhaps its because they hate America so much and Israel is America's only reliable ally in the Middle East.
Perhaps its because they hate western civlization so much that any bunch of insane fantics who are willing to blow themselves up to put women in burkas, dogs out of commission, and Orthodox Judaism and Christianity on the rocks appeals to them.
The ironic part is if the Islamolunatics take over, Hollyweird will be burned to the ground and most of these idiot producers will be decapitated. But ehn, even an evil outcome has positive benefits.
And the theme music to "Exodus" was very good.
That sounds about right. Look for Alan Rickman and Co. to make the film version of their West End production of "My Name is Rachel Corrie."
I wonder what Arafart thought when he read about the time he was left waiting in the visitor's chambers while Lewinski completed her consultative session with the Xlintoon?
Medved is also asking why, besides the wife of the main character, Israeli actors weren't cast, not to mention Jewish actors. I'm thinking now that maybe my man Jason Isaacs would have said 'no' if he'd been asked.
An Olympic athlete from the munich olympics is on now.
"Munich" doesn't even show what happened to the Israeli athletes, and two people have called in saying they are young and don't know the story and were wondering if the film would be educational. Will this be another case of history being rewritten and later generations not knowing the truth, e.g. the people called "Palestinians"?
Medved should have suggested people watch "One Day in September", which is how I learned about the Munich massacre story.
If leftist Americans can be (at least to one engaged in rational thought) anti-American, why is it hard to imagine that leftist Jews would be anti-Israel?
Well, as the son of a holocaust , I have some questions about Spielberg's Hollywood bent, that began with Schindler's List. Although I saw the film and thought it was brilliantly done, incredibly moving and poignant, I wondered then, as I do now: why does one of the world's most successfull director/producers choose to take such an oblique approach to these subjects? In Schindler, Spielberg tells the story of the Holocaust by telling us the story of the "good German". In other words, by telling the story from the point of view of the exceptional case, rather than the rule.
In Munich, which I have not seen and do not plan to see, it gets even more puzzling: why tell a story of ism in the Age of from a morally obtuse and equivocal viewpoint?
In the Schindler case, an equally uplifting tale could be told about the heroism and humanity of the concentration camp inmates: there are countless stories of the superhuman self-sacrifice made to help each other, the powerful human spirit of survival shown in the clever and desperate schemes to obtain a bit of food, escapes plots, attempts and failures and any number of angles so that the film wouldn't have to be an unmitigated pall of and despair.
Munich sounds like a real stinker in terms of moral equivalence. Having an opportunity to make a clear moral statement in a time when that would truly useful, Spielberg crapped out, Hollywood style. This was a picture for a Kerry administration, appreciative of the "moral complexities" between ers and the cops who tracked 'em down and evened the score.
why does one of the world's most successfull director/producers choose to take such an oblique approach to these subjects?
I forgot to mention: Why does such a man, who is also a Jew (and maybe the son of holocaust victims) do this?
Schindler's List was adapted from an acclaimed book so Spielberg was bound to follow its contours. There's something to be said for not focusing on a single Jewish family and risk sentimentality (this is the only family we should care about) and looking at it more abstractly from the outside.
From what little I know about him Hier is a star-struck ultra-liberal Modern Orthodox rabbi with consistent left-eye myopia. If he has ever criticized any leftwing groups or even spoken up on behalf of Israel during the current crisis I have never heard about it.
Michael Medved ping. Anyone want on or off this ping list, please send me an FR mail.
Well, that's not correct. Rabbi Hier is Orthodox, he is not an ultra-liberal nor is his organization, and in fact the heads of the organization are big fans of President Bush and supported Arnold in his election, not Bustamove or Davis.
