You can tell the sort of person one is by their actions "when nobody's looking."
Mel Brooks, and his late wife, Anne Bancroft, were wonderful, caring people.
For no reason, other than being wonderful, caring people, they did something really sweet for my sister, a complete stranger who they had never met before, and have never seen since.
Although I never met them, I'll always be thankful to them both.

Young Frankenstein is one of my top ten movies of all time. It is comedic genuis and I laugh as hard as I did watching it the first time every single time I watch it again.

Dittos on Mel Brooks. His comedies and productions always made me laugh. He featured some of my favorite comedians. Bless him.

"I'm not sure. Are we........black?"
"Yes, we are."
Then, we are very confused."

Yeah.. baby...!
My sentiments are same as yours. He was always hysterically funny! I can see yet, picture perfect, his "I'm Comin' to save you, Momma" scene, tears streaking down his cheeks in a Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. His was the best, very best, parody of the Beatnik generation.

Mel Brooks producing a Gene Wilder movie is the perfect combination.
In the original production of "The Producers" the Gene Wilder 'blue blanket' scene is my all-time favorite.

I think I know why parts of Hollywood may have resented Mel Brooks. I am not going with family to see the King Kong flick today. That scene from Young Frankenstein... where Gene Wilder introduces Peter Boyle... "Putting on the RiiiTTTZZZZ" -- Well, I can't trust that I won't burst out laughing at that "Introduction scene of King Kong".. .
Mel Brooks was a genius with comedy. Sure, sure bad taste with intelligence; but he did it SO WELL. And the casting for his films was PERFECT. Madeleine Kahn has always been my all-time favorite comedienne. "The nails... the nails.. Taffeta, darling..."
