The adults deemed illiterate in English include people who may be fluent in Spanish or another language but cannot comprehend English text at its most simple level.

And yet, I'm sure the cause of this "epidemic of illiteracy" is completely unknown to the idiots in the Press.

Step 1, make English the official language so everyone is working for the same end product.

Step 2, get the 11 million non-english speaking illegals out of the country.

Problem solved.

Many are the product of Whole Language.

Why most people can't memorize 100,000 words by the sixth grade so they can read proficiently using Whole Language is beyond me.

I'm sure the Educrats wouldn't push a unworkable reading method. I think these non-readers are just lazy.

I wonder how many of that are "handicapped" and how many are illegal immigrants myself. It would provide for a true measure of the stats to look at those and other factors I think.

Whole language hasn't been used around here for over 10 years. Phonics has though. It's what I use as a teacher.

So even as more people get a formal education, the literacy rate is not rising. Federal officials say this trend is puzzling and worthy of research.

Duh...it's called lowering the basket so everyone can get the ball in. It's called dumbing down "education". There's nothing puzzling about it. Go online and look at the sample tests for graduating high school. It's shameful.

AS the drumbeat of "college for everyone" becomes louder and louder, the standards and requirements for all those unworthy, unequipped, and unfit for college and yet who are admitted anyway MUST COME DOWN. And so they have. The fact that there's even such a thing as remedial math and remedial English classes IN COLLEGE is an outrage.

Depends on the area. Standards are becoming tougher here. I expect my first graders to come in from kindergarten reading. Most of them are reading chapter books by tne end of first grade.
