"One outraged Republican strategist claimed, “If Alito were a liberal there would be no way Democrats and Washington’s media elite would use such a racially insensitive nickname. Italian-Americans should not have to face these types of derogatory racial slurs in 21st century America.”

If a republican said this it is incredibly stupid. First because there is nothing insensitive in the nickname. Second, because Americans of Italian descent don't worry about such nonsense.

Look for the Jacka$$ party to start insinuating Alito's has Mob ties.

The conjoining of the same is not racial, and it is a stretch to claim it is. It is no more than conjoining other names: Reid and Shumer as Reimer or Shumeid; Kennedy and Clinton as Kenton or Clinedy.

Are the dems going to conjoin Nuclear Trigger? Now, THAT could be racist.

This is a subtle slur against his Italian heritage.

After all, everyone knows that Eyetalians hate blacks, right? </sarc>

OK, so Scalito is a fictional gangster name.

I just find it funny that the DNC would already be plunging the depths of that hole they've already dug for themselves to come up with this moniker.

Help me out: Was Al "The Jug" Scalito a real person, or a fictional character? Either way, isn't this a mob slur?

"...Wasn't "scalito" the nickname of the Al Pacino character "Scarface?" Not sure, but Pacino's Scarface was Cuban, not Italian...."

His name in "Scarface" was Tony Montana. Not sure if he had a nickname in the flick. Pacino's name in "Carlito's Way" was Carlito Brigante. That's probably what you're thinking of.

"Either way, isn't this a mob slur?"

The Rats will start a rumor that Alito put some muscle on Meirs to get her to quit and got the nomination by making Bush an offer he couldn't refuse.

It's their way or the highway. Well, sorry, you dimwitted dem/lib/lefties...not this time. It's the American way and if you don't like it tough! We've had to put up with your liberal judges for years. Now we get to hear REAL judges.

Someone from New Jersey said his home boys call him Sammy "the Judge" Alito. Man, I'm thinking about pizza for lunch today.

If I was a lawyer, and my last name was Alito, I would consider it an honor to be called that.

The common diminutive in Italian is ino or ina. Antonino (little Anthony) for example. Momentino...short moment. I think some other diminutives are etto and otto.

But I'm not aware of ito being a diminutive in Italian. Isn't ito a diminutive in Spanish?

I thought Italians were evil white Europeans

Correct you are. Italians are substantially Caucasoid. This issue, at a painfully long stretch, may involve cultural bigotry but not racism.

So how did the R word end up on Drudge?

First, Drudge is ignorant. Second, liberals have so skewed the debate that many in the US, without a decent, formal education, confuse culture and race. Others confuse skin color with race, confuse geopolitical subdivisions with race and, of course, identify conflicting political viewpoints as racially motivated if any geopolitics are involved.

Political debate in the US is littered with false prejudices fostered by liberals. Today, Italians are victims of racism. Yesterday, Mexicans were the victims. And so it goes.

I personally think it is not productive to continue to refer to Judge Samuel Alito as "Scalito".

People have been calling him Scalito for years. That's not going to change. It's a good name.

Subtle humor. Very well, then. But if it wasn't an ethnic slur, then why didn't they pair him with Clarence Thomas and call him Thomato?

I agree... Interestingly both the left and right can disparage the use of such blatantly trumped-up, phony race card or ethnic grievance tactics. When the left objects, though, it's a clear case of hypocrisy, and they can and should be slammed for it. When the right objects, it's a manifestation of adhering to principles, honesty, and decency.
