By the way what's a fire "figher"?

Yes, everyone got water. That day.

What if the SBC was manning a relief station, and all that came to be distributed that day was Anheuser Busch water cans? Would the pastor say, "Forget it. These folks won't get anything today!"

I would hope not. If I was there and this scenario happened, I would pass out the water, whether the pastor approved or not.

The whole thing is just so small, and reflects poorly on the good work of the SBC and its people in this disaster.

It's so trivial that it's idiotic and childish for them to refuse to handle the water.

It's not about alcohol, because there's no alcohol involved. This is roughly equivalent to the British workplaces that banned Piglet stuffed animals--not an actual pork product, and certainly no requirement that anyone be required to use pork products or handle them or be near them.

Just the fetish about the idea of a pig.

That's all.

Here is an analogy you might understand. A large poison manufacturer decided to help in the relief efforts and put water in it's cans. The can's were labeled poison not for human consumption and had a skull and crossbones on the side. Everyone got upset and said that we cannot pass out water in these cans. Children drinking this water might one day think that it is OK to drink out of any can labeled poison.

To the SB there is no difference. To them they are passing out water with a poison label on it. A poison to the body and the soul. Children may think that it OK to drink out of any can with this poison beer label on it.

As He was a Jew, I keep envisioning Manischewitz Concord Grape wine (it's real good with peanut butter, not just by itself at bar mitzvahs). Anyhow, if He could share the gospel better with someone who got a bit pickled, He would do that. He's here to win souls, not to be a health guru for bodies.

Since this never happened it's dumb to get mad or argue over a hypothetical. Yes, this whole thing was so small that it reflects poorly on us arguing about a microscopic detail, forgetting the fact they're out there doing Christ's work effectively. On that note, I'm leaving this thread because it's deteriorated into sheer stupidity.

I never understood the whole Baptist hangup about drinking, when Christ and all the disciples drank.

The said "Drinking Water" and bore a black-and-white rendition of the Anheuser-Busch corporate logo.

The article says Budweiser cans.

I'm not mad or arguing. The principle is what matters. SBC gets a bad rap because a pastor gets tied up in knots over doing what he percieves is the right thing.

It's just a discussion thread. My point in making the scenario is that I have seen first hand what happens when religious fervor or intensity overcomes common sense.

Actually that analogy or whatever you call your post, was even crappier than Between the Lines' analogy. Since they object to consuming alochol, I guess it makes a little sense that they'd object to handing out water cans advertising a beer company? Everybody got their water, we won't even go into the hypothetical about what if they were the only people for miles handing water to dehydrated, near-death people, and like I just said to somebody, I'm gone from this idiotic thread.

Go to the link, there's a streaming video where the cans are visible.

It's a perfect analogy. Sorry it stymies you so.

I don't think they'd go that far. But I don't like dealing with hypothetical stuff like that, because every time I fall into that trap discussing/arguing/debating that with someone, it turns ugly fast and the original point is lost. But I doubt they'd lack such common sense as to do that. Hell, I don't even think half of Southern Baptists believe drinking is wrong. My church is part of the convention, and it's never been an issue of divisiveness for us.

A popular Baptist theology is that Jesus turned water into Welch's, saying that the Old Testament has reference to wine as "blood of the grape." Of course anyone who tried to keep it around for any length of time in that pre-refrigeration era would find it was getting alcoholic, and they didn't have the convenience of flights from Chile for grapes year round.

The Jews themselves, who drink alcoholic wine regularly at solemn religious occasions, have proven to suffer less alcoholism than the world as a whole; it's not as much the beverage but the context in which it is used that makes it good or bad.

I think it sucks, but I just realized I've been getting a little too hot about this discussion/debate. What I saw was the media bashing the SBC, then people on here going along with that criticism, then thinking "what? I thought we were beyond falling for leftist bias at freerepublic." Got a little frustrated with that. But anyways I'm calling it a night before I have an anurism over canned water. Goodnight.

If that is where you saw it, I will have to take your word. The security here at work rejects streaming video from unsecured sites.

If this news station cannot get it's printed story to match it's video, I have to doubt everything they have presented to us.

That's cool. We're cool, too.

Thanks for your work in the fire service. My eldest graduated fire academy in June, and is an active volunteer firefighter in his community.

This is the same kid I had to drag out of bed every morning to go to school til he graduated high school.

I couldn't be prouder.
