Don't Be Bearish on Bush
Forbes Magazine ^ | October 31, 2005 Issue | Steve Forbes

Posted on 10/24/2005 8:50:35 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

Nothing goes right these days for President Bush and congressional Republicans. If elections were held now, the GOP would be routed. Many of the wounds are self-inflicted--reckless spending, a botched Social Security initiative, a slow response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster, a seemingly uninspired pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, tactical mistakes in Iraq (e.g., an inadequate number of troops), unwillingness to be bold on tax reform. Compounding these missteps is an out-for-blood media and an abusive Texas prosecutor.

But a year in politics is equal to a century in normal life. The President and his party can turn the tables before next year's congressional elections.

President Bush has not done a Ronald Reagan-like job in explaining Iraq to the American people. But despite the errors, the bottom line is that Bush's bold gamble to recast the destructive politics of the Middle East will work, especially if Iraq's December national legislative elections go well, as is likely. The disheartening violence against our troops comes primarily from a handful of areas. Many of the insurgents are not Iraqis. Iraqi security forces are growing, both in numbers and competence. Rebels no longer shut down the country's electricity grid or disrupt the flow of oil.

President Bush can still call for spending restraints; he does, after all, have a veto card to play against Congress' spending bills. The public would applaud him for it. People are disconcerted by the White House's seeming abdication of leadership here.

Establishing tax-free enterprise zones in our devastated Gulf region would be a masterstroke. The area would recover quickly. New Orleans could once again become a vibrant, prosperous metropolis, something it hasn't been for decades.

But then again, look on the bright side! Except for the economy, spending, entitlement reform, the Supreme Court, national defense, disaster relief and tax reform, they're doing a great job!

You did forget to commend them on their job with our border security, illegal immigration (invasion), and education. And they did it all WITHOUT FIGHTING THE DEMS!!!

I highly doubt that. By whom, for example?

"(Miers Miers Miers Miers Miers--I'm mired in Miers.) "

Is it then safe to say that this judicial pick left Bush in a "QuagMier?"

Many of Bush's problems are caused by left-wing propaganda, and can be resolved in the same way that he has successfully defused these lying attacks before.

The Miers nomination is a whole other kettle of fish. In this case, he has done it to himself, and then has tried to resolve his own mistake by attacking his supporters.

Not only that, but he has succeeded in exacerbating all the other questions. Many of us were willing to say, "Well, we'll excuse the excessive spending, or the failure to deal with the borders, or the failure to veto McCain's Campaign Reform Atrocity, or (fill in the blank), if Bush feels that those compromises are necessary in order to get the voter support to do his main job.

But the SCOTUS appointments ARE the main job.

Did we swallow all those other compromises in order to get Harriet Miers onto the Supreme Court? I don't think so.

As long as the Miers mess continues, it will keep roiling the waters and recall all those other dubious decisions. End it quickly, then put a really good judge on the court, using every arm-twisting technique necessary on the Dems and RINOs, and that will put an end to many of the other complaints.

There's no other way to do it.

Forbes would have made the better President.

In my view, anyone in that goup of primary candidates would have been a better president...Apparently the media convinced the people to vote for Bush because he was winnable...

Yeah, at least he understands that the president can veto congressional spending.
Dubya is too addicted to spending OPM.

Yeah. We're too stupid to decide on our own, like you are, so we need the media to tell us who to vote for.

If you actually believe that Gary Bauer or Alan Keyes wouldn't have been laughingstocks in the first two months of their presidencies, I have a bridge to sell you.

So now the "uber-conservatives" are demanding that Bush attack Syria?

You people are nuts.

I can't picture either one of 'em checking the dipstick on their car's engine.
Do you think, if they collaborated, they can figure out how to pop open the hood?

I agree. Bush was close to my last choice of the GOP primary candidates (McPain was dead last). That said, he was still worlds better than Bradley or Gore.

It is necessary for conservatives to line up early with both votes and financial resources behind ONE candidate.
