What is the connection?
1. Wilson's wife recommended him for the trip to Niger.
2. Wilson then lied about his findings in Niger, claiming that Cheney had been responsible for sending him.
3. Any attempt to refute his charges required finding out why he had gone in the first place -- if not for Cheney.
4. Any search for an answer to the question of "Who sent Wilson?" would inevitably reveal that he had been sent by his wife.
Thus, when Wilson first went public with his lies, in May, he began a chain of events that would eventually lead somebody to the discovery of his wife's identity.
